After big drops in the ratings, it looked like So You Think You Can Dance might be cancelled last year. FOX renewed the program but the focus has shifted to young dancers — So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Will this change bring in a bigger audience or will the ratings drop lower? Will it be renewed for a 14th season? Stay tuned.
Hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance is a competition that pits dancers (now ages 8-13) of various backgrounds against one another to become “America’s Favorite Dancer.” They are partnered with “all-star” dancers from past season. Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo return as regular judges. They are joined by 13-year-old judge Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms).
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
9/13 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The 12th season of So You Think You Can Dance averaged a 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the So You Think You Can Dance TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a 14th season? Is the “Next Generation” format working?
I was very uncomfortable with the young children and their reactions to being eliminated. I only watched a little of the first episode and then stopped watching because it was so painful. I would love to see the original format return because I did not miss one episode previously.
CANCEL IT! I agree and absolutely HATE the new format, I did not watch a single episode last year; FYI I never missed an episode in all the prior seasons. I am not the least bit interested in watching children pretend to dance. The target audience now appears to be limited to “parents of children who think that their precious darlings actually can dance!” ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. . . .
So disappointed with the format for 2016 that I did not wish to watch even one episode. This show has been a treat to look forward to each summer since its inception, and I even endured the Street vs Stage phase. No children, please, not appropriate.
I agree cancel the kids and bring back the old format was working great and I look forward to the show and was disappointed to see the kids on just not the same. Do NOT cancel just change it back!! I love this show!
True art and beauty have become such a rarity on television that it should be unthinkable to cancel this incredible show, my favorite on television and the reason I keep my Dish account alive. I enjoyed the kids much more than I had imagined, but would prefer a return to the old format.
Don’t make the mistake of cancellation, FOX………….
I agree with all the comments concerning the Next Generation format. The children are not mature, should not be dancing all these styles with adults, are not mature enough to take tough criticism (hence the judges pulling punches). And these kids are not anywhere near old enough to be launching careers from the show. And finally, no road show. My husband and I attended eight road shows and loved them. I wasn’t thrilled by stage versus street either.
Cancel the kiddies or move it to Nickelodeon TV. The only parts worth watching were the Allstars.
We want the old format back! The whole extended family of us LOVED to get together to watch seasons 7,8,9,10 and 12! Those were our favorites, and WE WANT MORE! Don’t cancel, just bring it back to what it used to be! I think season 9 was the best format.
PS. We really enjoyed watching the little ones dance. I can go either way with the next season. My Eight YO. loved the little ones and was inspired.
My daughter and hubs watch every show. We LOVE, the show, and feel we know every contestant. We had tickets for Seattle and Vancouver last year.
Very interesting, I came upon this website tonight, surfing the for tickets.
Seeing the previous post from, dancing cactus. My daughter is doing, one of her Third grade books report on Misty Copeland.
Small world and amazing dancers. Don’t give up and keep dancing, please!
Okay, first of all. They need to revamp the show. And NO, don’t go back to the old formats of Mary and Nigel…I love Mary but come on, it’s tired. Let’s bring in some new young blood. Keep Misty Copeland on as judge – someone young and fun. Keep Nigel AWAY. Bring in more viewer participation! I would love to get a say in which couples I want to see dance a certain style…Lord knows there have been countless episodes where I wanted to see certain contestants dance a certain style (I was screaming at the TV by then)… Also,… Read more »
I like these ideas, dc! Especially with the viewer participation amp up.
But I actually like Nigel there, I see him as the backbone. Though I thought he judged best in seasons up to 9, I think they all got too lax after that and didn’t focus on the technicals as much.
Please bring back the old format with young adult dancers and not kids. It was also my favorite summer show until the kids were added. And I also really liked it when they awarded one make and one female dancer winners at the end of the season. Moreover you just left out a whole demographic of young adults coming of age who were excited to audition for the show when you pulled the age group back to 13??!!?? What was that about? Give the young kids something to aspire to. There are plenty of conditions and conventions around the country… Read more »
Most favorite show after Idol disraveled, but only because of the fabulous adult dancers. Bring them back. You’re losing me to DWTS.
Lets be real. The only reason they did “Next Generation” was because they wanted to pull the dance mom viewers. While the kids have immense talent, they lack the maturity and depth. Furthermore, they just dont have the experience to pull off emotional pieces. Drop the kid acts and go back to creating art, not gimmicks
Didn’t like the season 13 format, missed the adults. Love the original show. Don’t like Paula, wish Mary Murphy back – she made the show!
I agree! Bring Mary back! And Debbie and Christina and Adam. And I loved it when Neil Patrick Harris was a guest judge.
