Will Once Upon a Time be cancelled or renewed for season seven? Although producer ABC Studios is still negotiating with Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle, and already has Colin O’Donoghue on the hook for another season, star Jennifer Morrison has announced that she is out. Rumor has long had it that Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin have viewed the current sixth season as their final installment.
Morrison, who plays Emma Swan — the character who is arguably at the heart of Once Upon a Time — will not re-up her contract for a season seven on the ABC TV series. On Instagram, Morrison revealed she has declined to renew her contract, but did say that if ABC renews Once Upon a Time for season seven, she will appear in one episode. Reportedly, Andrew J. West would also star in the new season.
Since their shows, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC) and Dead of Summer (Freeform) were both cancelled after one season, it makes sense that, professionally, creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz would want to continue Once Upon of Time — even in a rebooted fashion. Still to us, Once Upon a Time has always felt like Emma Swan’s story. What’s the point of continuing what has always been Emma’s story, without Emma?

Because social media posts sometimes disappear, here’s the text, for posterity:
As I reached the end of my 6 year contract on ONCE UPON A TIME, I was faced with a significant decision. ABC, Eddy Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz very generously invited me to continue as a series regular. After very careful consideration, I have decided that creatively and personally, it is time for me to move on.
Emma Swan is one my favorite characters that I have ever played. My 6 years on ONCE UPON A TIME has changed my life in the most beautiful ways. I am absolutely blown away by the passion and commitment of the Oncer fans. I am so honored to have been a central part of such a special show.
I will be forever grateful to Adam, Eddy, and ABC for giving me the gift of playing Emma Swan.
As I move on to other creative endeavors, I will continue to attend the fan conventions whenever my professional schedule allows. I always look forward meeting the fans.
If ABC Network does in fact order a season 7, I have agreed to appear in one episode, and I will most certainly continue to watch ONCE UPON A TIME. The creativity of the show runners has always inspired me, and I cannot wait to see the ways that they continue to develop and reinvent the show.#Onceuponatime #EmmaSwan #UglyDucklings
What do you think? Are you still watching the Once Upon a Time TV show? Since Jennifer Morrison is leaving, do you think ABC should cancel or renew it for season seven? Would you watch Once, without her?
They really need to cancel the show — the ratings are down and with Jennifer leaving, it needs to end. They really need to give it an ending it deserves though and if they can’t finish it this season then maybe just have one special episode in September to end it properly.
It would be very sad if Jennifer would leave the show as well as josh and Jennifer They are the glue along with ALL the other regulars that make up the show and make it so successful If they want to leave then let season 7 end the show completely with all loose ends tied up I have been a staunch follower of the series since day one I love the series so much I block watch the show from beginning to end each time I rewatch it To all those that want to leave PLEASE DONT You’ll kill the… Read more »
I think the show had a lot of potential to continue with other characters like Henry, who is growing up. More of Hook, who I really like, should be interesting especially without Emma. They’ve introduced characters over the years who have lasted several seasons such as the Wicked Witch. I’d keep tuning in. I’ve enjoyed the ride and the vast variety of cross-over stories. Emma actually was never my favorite character and I found her often to be too bland. I hope Regina would be back, my favorite character. Gold/Rumple is always fun to watch if Carlyle would want to… Read more »
I understand. This really SHOULD be the last season anyways. I loved Seasons 1-4. Season 5 was a little stale. This season has sucked. Happily ever after needs to come before the show gets unwatchably bad.
I love the show, it would be.difficult to watch without the Savior. Convince her to stay.
She stuck it out longer than I did. I quit in whatever season had them all going to hell.
Last season… Season 5. I admit… that was when I kinda thought it was getting stale. This season though… has been a real slog to get through (not including yesterday’s musical episode).
Convince her to come back and wrap it up in 10 episodes.
I can’t see the show without Jennifer Morrison. She is the story.
