Well, whether you like the idea or not, it looks like the Gilligan’s Island movie is moving forward.
As fans of classic TV know all too well, Gilligan’s Island follows seven stranded castaways on a tropical island. The legendary cast is made up of Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells). The show ran for three successful seasons on CBS before finding even bigger success in syndication.
The notion of a feature film version of the series has been bandied about for decades but nothing’s ever come of it. At one point, Jim Carrey was going to play Gilligan.
In January 2009, creator Sherwood Schwartz said that he’d just made a deal to finally bring the project to the big screen. He also said, if he could cast anyone, he’d love to have Michael Cera play Gilligan and Beyonce Knowles play Ginger.
Now, Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment are prepping the feature. Producer Charles Roven said, “The characters are so good. We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.”
Schwartz will executive produce and Brad Copeland (Arrested Development, My Name Is Earl and the forthcoming Yogi Bear movie) will write the script. Production is expected to get underway next year but the search for a director and casting won’t begin until the script is finished.
No word if the three surviving castmembers from the TV show – Louise, Johnson and Wells — will be offered roles in the movie but it seems likely. Several Brady actors had cameos in the first Brady Bunch movie which was also executive produced by Schwartz.
What do you think? Does it help to know the show’s creator is working on the project or do you think it’ll be as terrible as most TV show feature films? Who would you cast?
