Gilligan’s Island: The Movie Gets a Little Closer

Gilligan's IslandWell, whether you like the idea or not, it looks like the Gilligan’s Island movie is moving forward.

As fans of classic TV know all too well, Gilligan’s Island follows seven stranded castaways on a tropical island. The legendary cast is made up of Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells). The show ran for three successful seasons on CBS before finding even bigger success in syndication.

The notion of a feature film version of the series has been bandied about for decades but nothing’s ever come of it. At one point, Jim Carrey was going to play Gilligan.

In January 2009, creator Sherwood Schwartz said that he’d just made a deal to finally bring the project to the big screen. He also said, if he could cast anyone, he’d love to have Michael Cera play Gilligan and Beyonce Knowles play Ginger.

Do you think Michael Cera would agree to play Gilligan?

Now, Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment are prepping the feature. Producer Charles Roven said, “The characters are so good. We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.”

Schwartz will executive produce and Brad Copeland (Arrested Development, My Name Is Earl and the forthcoming Yogi Bear movie) will write the script. Production is expected to get underway next year but the search for a director and casting won’t begin until the script is finished.

No word if the three surviving castmembers from the TV show – Louise, Johnson and Wells — will be offered roles in the movie but it seems likely. Several Brady actors had cameos in the first Brady Bunch movie which was also executive produced by Schwartz.

What do you think? Does it help to know the show’s creator is working on the project or do you think it’ll be as terrible as most TV show feature films? Who would you cast?

If they make this movie and pass up Simon Baker as the Professor they are nuts. Those two are practically twins and Baker embodies everything the Professor did. On the Mentalist, he’s funny, witty, serious, sexy and also oddly asexual. That was the Professor. Mostly he’s gotta be handsome as the Professor was.

christina Hendricks as Ginger, michael caine as mr. howell, baransky as mrs. howell.

Jerry Trainer as Gilligan
Brandan Gleeson as Skipper
Suzie Kennedy as Ginger
Simon Baker as The Professor
Robin Williams as Mr. Howell
Glenn Close as Mrs. Howell

But, I would have to go with:

Gilligan – Justin Long or Jerry Trainor (Both have the look and Trainor has the zany, comical antics)

Skipper – Brendan Gleeson (Has the look and the size)

Mr. Howell – Steve Carell or Robin Willaims (Both have great versatility and the eyebrows and nose)

Mrs. Howell – Glenn Close (Would do this character justice)

Ginger – Suzie Kennedy (Had never heard of her until reading other comments for this blog. I don’t know much acting experience she has, but she makes her profession as Marilyn Monroe. Tina Louise seemed to pattern her character from Monroe, as well, and wasn’t really a great actress herself.)

The Professor – Simon Baker (Remarkable resemblance)

Marianne – Jennifer Lopez (Come on…who doesn’t wanna see JLo in pigtails and daisy dukes???)
