Jesus has been resurrected. Deadline reports the Smithsonian Channel has ordered a a new series called The Real Jesus of Nazareth.
The docuseries is a followup to the 1977 Franco Zeffirelli miniseries Jesus of Nazareth, which starred Anne Bancroft, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, and Robert Powell.
The Real Jesus of Nazareth will follow Powell, who played Christ in the original miniseries, “as he returns to the Holy Land to seek out clues to the real historical figure who inspired Christianity.”
From Smithsonian executive David Royle:
Jesus of Nazareth is a cultural phenomenon, and essentially created a new image of Jesus for the television age. It’s a privilege to have gained access to the original film footage and Robert Powell’s unique connection to this story makes him a wonderful and insightful guide to the historical Jesus and the Holy Land.”
