It’s been suspected for awhile that 24 could be in its final season but the word is now official. The FOX series is ending after eight seasons on the air.
A high-action show, 24 follows a day in the life of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), a sometime government agent who gives his all to stop terrorists and uncover conspiracies and corruption. This season, the cast includes Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Anil Kapoor, Annie Wersching, Chris Diamantopoulos, Cherry Jones, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Westfeldt, John Boyd, Katee Sackhoff, and Mykelti Williamson.
The ratings have been in decline for awhile but, like most shows that have been on the air for a long time, the production costs have been rising.
Word of the show’s cancellation started to seep out earlier this afternoon. Director and Executive Produer John Cassar tweeted, “News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching”
The official word came down that the TV series is ending by mutual decision of executive producer Sutherland, executive producer and showrunner Howard Gordon, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Imagine Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting Company. The current season will continue to air on schedule and finish off with a two-hour finale on Monday, May 24th.
Of the series’ end, Sutherland tells the LA Times, “We’ve done eight years we’re very proud of, and we’re very excited about going into the film world with this… It’s very sad, the only thing tempering this from being all-out heartbreak is the fact that we have this sense of accomplishment. That’s the only thing holding people up. Because, for me, and all these people who’ve been with us since the beginning, it’s a very special thing and it’s very sad to see it end.”

There was talk of another network possibly taking the show on, most likely NBC, but that seemed unlikely considering the show’s age and costs. Sutherland tells TV Guide “that was never a real possibility for me.”
Instead of another season, Jack Bauer and company (depending on whoever survives the final episodes) will move directly into feature film mode. Sutherland says, “The hour-by-hour, episode-by-episode dynamic that made for such a thrill ride on television tied us down creatively. In real time, our characters can’t move around. But in a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, all of a sudden, Jack can get on a plane and fly from South America to Russia to England, and still have time to save the day in Washington.”
A script that would take Jack to Europe has been in the works for awhile and shooting could begin as early as this summer.
For now, fans are left to wonder how the final hours of the 24 TV series will wind down. It’s safe to say that Jack will live to see another day. Sutherland says, “What I do like about the ending and what I can say about it is that it’s very definitive about where Jack is going to end up. It can be perceived as a cliffhanger on some level, but there’s no questioning his options. That’s something we’ve never been able to do in the context of this series.”
Gordon says he toyed with how to end the show for years and didn’t count on the emotional impact that writing it would have on him. He says that the script was two days late and he just didn’t want to let it go.
That finale script includes a role for Eriq La Salle. The actor, best known for his role on ER, will play a “regal and charming UN Secretary General” in the final pair of episodes. You may recall that this was the role that was being cast recently with an alert from casting that these would be the final episodes.
What do you think? Are you sorry that the show’s ending or do you think it’s time for it to end? Will you see the movie?

There were only 2 reasons why I bought a 62″ wide screen television. One was to watch Deadwood and the other was 24.. No one said life had to be fair.. It was fun while it lasted. And NOW, we have Samsung marketing the worlds first 3D televison… AHHHHH! porn in 3D.. A new sun on the horizon.. Life is good!
Sorry to see 24 come to an end but it was expected sooner or later.. The writers were the best by far and should be snatched up by another network for a similar show. Where do you find writers like that? They gave us a cliff hanger every week that caused the viewers not to want to miss a show. We need more shows like 24.
24 IS ONE OF THE BEST AND EXCITING SHOWS. I AM SO SAD THAT IT IS GOING OFF
THE AIR
My daughter and I were always great fans of 24. We started the show from the very first episode. I lost her to cancer last year at age 27. The show is the one thing I have left in my life I enjoy. I wish they would reconsider.
It is my favorite show EVER. I am glued to my seat from beginning to end. I can’t wait for each new season to start and then I can’t wait for Monday nights. Although, I always record it and watch it on Tuesdays. I’m not sure how they can tell who is watching when people do that, but it sure saves me time and I don’t have to be kept in suspense for an extra 20 minutes while sitting through the advertisements.
Hi I’m so proud of Kiefer ,he’s Canadian!!! We just all love him and I always looked forward to Monday nights and now will feel completely lost!!!
This show was always so exciting and before you knew an hour or two hours flew by!
Everything stopped when this show was on in my household,no phone calls,no dates,no nothing!!!
I also have every year on DVD!!!!
So sadly missed! He was the greatest actor ever!!!!!

Are you going to really express their is “NO ONE” to pick up
“24”? This is everyones favorite “Show!”
Really allow us to put another “Reality Show” on and not find a “Spot for a Great Show?”
“Get it Together!”
I’m “HeartBroken” we don’t want a “Final Count Down!”
What we all want is “Our Show Back!!”

I love the show and I also have watched it since season one. My family and friends think I am a fanatic and know not to call me during 24. I am a devoted fan of the entire cast and will definately keep my eye out for the movie to be release.. GREAT JOB FOX! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE YEARS OF GREAT ENTERAINMENT.
OMG I AM EXTREMELY UPSET THIS CRAZY I HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR A LONG TIME NOW AND TO HEAR THIS IS NOT MAKING ME FEEL ANY BETTER IT IS NOT TIME FOR A ENDING IT HAS JUST GOT STARTED BUT I WOULD GUESS THE MOVIE IS GONNA BE THE BOMB UGH I AM SO MAD
I hear you all loud and clear! As stated earlier, I’ve watched “24” since the first episode. I turned a friend on to the series some “3” years ago. He went out and bought all previous season episodes on DVD just to get caught up. This show is like dope, an addition that you just can’t get enough of. I surely wish “FOX” and the Executive Producers would find away to keep this show going for years to come. There is nothing like it on T.V.. As my 20 year old son stated, ” if “24” is cancelled, we might… Read more »
My husband and I are die-hard fans on 24 and have not missed one episode in the eight years. Yes, it is very sad we will probably have “24” withdrawals come next January.
Best show my friends and I have ever watched. I have watched this show for the past four years and will be lost on Monday night without it. It was never boring. The writers were the best. Certainly knew how to keep the audience in suspense which is not easy to do for so many years. Hopefully there will be another series like it. I guess Keith Sutherland got tired after being Jack Bauer for so many years. The movies will never take it’s place. I loved the suspense every Monday night and the discussios that followed. Lots of luck to… Read more »
24 is my most favorite show on TV…I love Jack Bauer, Khloe and this entire show period! My vote, for what it’s worth (nothing), is for FOX executives to find a way to keep this show on the air. Without it, I’m done and have zero plans to watch FOX anymore!
I agree…..I wont watch fox anymore……..They should bring the show BACK!
Agree, Best Show Evr!!! It will make a great movie but I will miss my Monday Fix.
Kiefer is the Man…. He makes me feel safe in any world, even my TV fantasy world.
I am already suffering withdrawl!
Best Show Ever. I will not what to do on Mondays. I am lookoing forward to the movie. Keifer Sutherland rules.
