ABC gave Black Box a straight-to-series order and ordered 13 episodes without seeing a pilot first. They held it until late in the season (typically not a good sign) on Thursdays at 10pm as a replacement for their hit show, Scandal. Will Black Box live up to expectations? Will it be a ratings success and earn a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.
Black Box revolves around a beautiful and brilliant neuroscientist (Kelly Reilly) who’s hiding the fact that she’s bipolar. The rest of the cast includes Ditch Davey, David Ajala, Terry Kinney, Ali Wong, David Chisum, Laura Fraser, Siobhan Williams, and Vanessa Redgrave.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
8/7 update: ABC has cancelled Black Box after one season.
Final season averages: 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.41 million total viewers.

Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Black Box TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or be renewed for a second season?
Really like the show. Please do not cancel it. The show is quite different
I sure loved the characters and how they portray their roles in the society concerning a big percent of individuals with mentall illness. It doesn’t matter how a real person with bipolar disorder acts or what, because everyone is different. Two people with bipolar are definitely different from each other. So the show is just showing one person. I certainly loved the first episode and the all the other ones. Dont cancel this show.
I love the show can’t wait for next season!
We love the show. The actor are great. The stories are interesting. We have become addicted. Why hasn’t it been on since May 29? We hope they don’t cancel it!
i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this show please dont you Dare Cancel it
I really like it!
We love this show. Please don’t cancel it!
I really disliked this show for the first 2-3 episodes. After that, however, I found it not only entertaining, but quite interesting. I feel horrible now for the review I wrote just a week ago before I was able to see the 5 episodes.
All in all, I think it’s just another mistake that ABC is making. I believe that ABC itself has jumped the shark on this one….and they may live to regret it. 🙁
I ADMIT THAT I’M NOT A NEUROLOGIST — BUT I DON’T THINK THIS SHOW IS TRYING TO PORTRAY ONE. THE SHOW IS TRYING TO BE ENTERTAINING & IS NOT HARMING ANYONE, REALLY. I ENJOY THE SHOW A LOT. I HOPE THAT IT STAYS ON THE AIR & EVERYONE IN MY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS FEELS THE SAME.
Best new show on ANY network! Ranks right up there with my other two favorites, Revenge and Scandal. Hate that we must wait three weeks before seeing another episode. A.B.C. and Kelly Reilly will have another hit show on their hands if they don’t pull the plug before people become familiar with it.
Love it! Don’t cancel it please.
I don’t play a neurologist on television, I really am one. I find that the people who “REALLY LOVE!” this show are 1) young, 2) female, and 3) have brains totally uncontaminated by any knowledge whatsoever of a) the practice of medicine and b) mental illness. For those of you who like just a teensy bit of true-to-lifeness with their entertainment: You won’t find it here. “Way out in left field” is putting it mildly. This show has left the stadium, hopped a bus, and gone to the seashore. Black Box is so gratuitously offensive to modern medicine and mental… Read more »
I couldn’t agree more. As a medical student, researcher, and someone very familiar with bipolar (which I argue is more of a thought disorder rather than “mood” – but that’s a different argument altogether …), I share your sentiments exactly. I have contacted ABC, the writers, and producers of this show to let them know how offensive and *dangerous* this show is. It is very triggering for people who have to deal with the consequences of manic episodes, have dealt with debilitating depression, etc.
The world will be a better place without this show.
the answer is simple don’t watch the show. and IT’S FICTION!!! are you bipolar that you don’t get it’s fiction? you people are exhausting.
I have bipolar and I completely agree. However, I find the (lacking and slapdash) portrayal of mental illness much less offensive than the cardboard cutout characters and ridiculous writing. Dramatic license is fine in principle, even with something as personal as mental illness. Putting bad actors and bad scripts on TV is harder to excuse.
Dreadful show, truly dreadful. Into the bin.
I love this show! Please don’t cancel!!!!!!
