Last season, CBS introduced 10 new shows during the regular 2016-17 season. They cancelled half of them and renewed the other five. How will their new programming do in the ratings for the 2017-18 season? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 60 Minutes, 9JKL, The Amazing Race, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Big Brother: Celebrity Edition, Blue Bloods, Bull, Code Black, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Instinct, Kevin Can Wait, Life in Pieces, Living Biblically, MacGyver, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Me Myself & I, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Pink Collar Crimes, Ransom, Salvation, Scorpion, SEAL Team, Superior Donuts, Survivor, TKO: Total Knock Out, Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition, Whistleblower, Wisdom of the Crowd, and Young Sheldon.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
Please put “Bull” back!
Ugh really? Bull is like the dumbest show on TV. It is laughably predictable and Michael Weatherly is a horrific actor. He is only passable in garbage roles like NCIS and Bull. I have also heard he is inappropriate with female actresses on the show.
NCIS LA is absolutely awful now. The new cast members are terrible, as are the new story lines. When can we expect to see Heddy coming back? She was the heart of a now heartless show.
I agree. We have quit watching. The two new characters cannot replace Hetty. Chemistry is gone.
Hetty going back next week bring her getting ride of new boss of the show it cliffhanger this week crazy episode.
Put this show on at 10PM an move Madam Secretary back to 8PM or 9PM an Move Scorpian to (PM.
Please renewed scorpion so good just like macgver science but genius that have disability really story. Many more seasons to come.
“Mom” is doing really well, it’s a great show. It deserves it.
Isn’t Zoo the only genre (as in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, supernatural, superhero) show they have on CBS, aside from Salvation? Thanks for crapping on the younger viewers by cancelling it. Anyway, it’s funny that Salvation is only in its first season but did the same ratings as Zoo in its third season. Good for Salvation, I guess, that it was renewed. But it’s funny how a show in its third season is doing the same as a freshman season, and they cancel the clearly better-doing show. I hope the crime procedural shows, the only kind they have left on that… Read more »
CW is owned by CBS and has supernatural shows. so they have cop shows on the main network and comics/sci fi on the CW
Salvation had 900,000 more viewers than Zoo and had slightly higher ratings. Plus, Zoo is more expensive to produce.
Please renewed scorpion need ratings go up so darn good shows.
I love the new Macgyver and the cast.
Summer shows (Salvation) are not included in these network season charts ?
Those would be in the 2016-17 chart.
WOW! did Kevin can wait take crap in the ratings!
Why couldn’t CBS place Madam Secretary at an earlier time, they are slowly destroying a great show at that late time slot of 10.00 or 10.30 pm!
Madam Secretary is a great show! Needs to be placed in a different time slot.
Dramas tend to fill the 10pm slots. It’s pretty normal actually
Please renewed all ncis shows, Hawaii Five-0 and Macgver many more seasons.
Love new Seal Team!!
It”s great to have a show that mixes action with the personal lives of the seals.
Great actors too!
Love!!!
I can’t believe I cancelled Mom. I love that show. N donut..better than Kevin can wait nonsense .I stayed in CBS cause it had the best shows . not anymore sorry u made such wrong choices to toss
Mom is currently airing it’s 5th season and is up in the ratings, where did you get that it’s been cancelled from?
Yeah need more attention why do ‘t caring more already are doing great shows.
When I look at some of the numbers from year-to-year they don’t look right. It look very misleading because it seems like they’re doing very well but if you look at the year before it’s different it’s worse . Cell numbers are misleading
