ABC has introduced four new sitcoms so far this season. Black-ish is a success and was given a full season order last month while Selfie and Manhattan Love Story were both cancelled. Meanwhile Cristela’s fate was uncertain — until now. The network has now ordered a full season of the Friday night comedy.
On Cristela, a young Mexican-American woman (Cristela Alonzo) works to become an attorney while juggling her responsibilities to her traditional family. The rest of the cast includes Maria Canals-Barrera, Carlos Ponce, Terri Hoyos, Gabriel Iglesias, Sam McMurray, Justine Lupe, and Andrew Leeds.
Debuting on October 10th, the first episode of Cristela drew a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.51 million viewers. It was an okay start. The ratings dropped in weeks two and three but have now leveled off to about a 1.0 demo rating with around five million viewers.
That’s not very good for a Friday show but (these days) it’s not awful either. For comparisons, lead-in Last Man Standing, has been averaging a 1.3 demo rating with 6.76 million.
Though Cristela certainly isn’t a hit, ABC appears to be satisfied enough with the show’s performance to order nine more episodes, bringing the season tally to 22 episodes.
Unless the ratings improve, a second season renewal for Cristela seems like a longshot but that decision is now months away. Perhaps the ratings will improve before May.
What do you think? Do you like the Cristela TV show? Are you glad that ABC has ordered more episodes?
I really like this show ! I look forward to a second season !!!
Love love this show it’s nice to see a female Hispanic comedian that’s very funny!
It is a cute show to watch. E and my wife like to watch it, I’ve heard that Rosanne Bar is going to be on it, if she will ruin it and me and my wife will quit watching it, hope it’s not true.
Yes, my husband and I love Cristela! Not many comedies are actually funny and still pretty clean. It’s funny without being in your face gross.
My favorite show !!!
I think Cristela is a very cute show..Yes its sometime overacted but the cast and characters are really fun to see… Im sure Cristela will grow over next few months..Its really nice to turn on a show that can make you laugh and feel good inside. I hope ABC gives it a full 2nd season…They should promote it more
I love this new family show! It has great writing and such likable characters. I will be so disappointed if it’s not renewed!
i like it. give it a little more time and promote the broadcast day and time
It deserves a whole season just for the “bag of oranges” joke in the pilot. Cristela is likable as is her family- there is too much animosity between her and her brother in law- that is just a little too mean- but Carlos Ponce is great. This show could really grow into something special. I agree with everyone else “Malibu Country” was a great show that ABC screwed- but then I have been mad at ABC since their disasterous decision to cancel their Soaps. I grew up wathcing One Life to Live and it had a few more years left… Read more »
I think it’s cute..it’s improved from the first episodes.
I hope it sticks around a while. The characters are very likeable. And (I hope this doesn’t sound racist or even reverse-racist!) with the ever-growing Hispanic demographic, it makes sense to have mainstream sitcoms that have fun (please Cristela don’t get too preachy!) addressing culture contrasts.
I can’t say I was the biggest fan of the show to start with, but then Cheers, Growing Pains, and Friends all pretty much sucked until you got invested in them as well. The show is growing on me, and will continue to do so, as long as they start backing off of the “Hispanics are so victimized” twist to their storylines. Just not interested in seeing any of that, EVER. I agree that Malibu Country was an AMAZING show, that I never missed an episode of, and will add that I never missed an episode of The Neighbors, and… Read more »
Not very happy about the news. Really hope Cristela gets one season tops.
I’m pretty annoyed that this show has much lower ratings than Malibu Country had a couple seasons ago – yet ABC struggled to order even a few additional episodes of Malibu Country and ended up cancelled it after one shorter-than-normal season.
I know, so pissed off. They screwed “Malibu Country” , I hope they do the right thing and stop production after eighteen episodes and cancel it. Last Man Standing should move to another network. ABC can keep Fridays for their precious “Shark Tank” and “20/20”.
It’s a cute show and I think they should continue……no more disgusting zombies please…..the cast is good and the story lines have been pretty realistic without being smaltzy….
