Last year, the second season of Defiance was way down in the ratings. How will the series perform in season three — will the numbers get better or fall lower? Will this Syfy series be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season? Stay tuned.
Defiance takes place in the year 2047 — some 30 years after various alien races arrived on Earth. The town of Defiance (what used to be St. Louis) stands as an example of how humans and aliens can live harmoniously (mostly) together. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Jesse Rath, Trenna Keating, Anna Hopkins, Nicole Munoz, Lee Tergesen, Conrad Coates, and Nichole Galicia.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
10/16 update: Syfy has cancelled Defiance after three seasons.
Final season averages: 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.13 million total viewers.

For comparisons: The second season of Defiance averaged a 0.46 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.56 million viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Defiance TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
They should absolutely renew Syfy’s Defiance. It’s a great clever and unique show. I love the characters settings and storylines. It would seriously be a great loss if its not renewed. The ratings are misleading, maybe the wrong people are giving you the results, because I had it on every night that it aired from day 1 in my household and that should count for something. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for season 4.
Sincerely, Derek Eno Cambridge, ma.
Defiance is a cracking good show and reminds me of the days of Space 1999 and Babylon 5 when the shows were worth the time to sit and watch every episode either good or bad because you loved the characters. It deserves a fourth season. The majority of Sci/fi shows made today are just not good enough, poor character development and boringly same-same story lines that don’t deliver. Defiance did deliver a roller coaster ride where you never quite knew where it was going, but you wanted to go along for the ride too. One more season of Defiance is… Read more »
I’m not a sci-Fi fan but every once in a while I do find enjoyment in a well dorm sci-Fi movie or series and Defience is one I enjoyed very much. I wonder how DVR or other recording devices or streaming television to watch their favorite programs at their convenience and how this affects ratings? Do ratings consist of viewers who watch the program on its original air time? I never watch programs on their original air time unless there are no commercials and I wonder how many people do as I do and watch almost all television programming after… Read more »
Please please renew Defiance for a fourth season. It is innovative, fascinating and absolutely brilliant, even better than SG 1. Season 3 was awesome and I just couldn’t wait each week until the next episode.
I hope it comes back as well. I would like to see the growth of Irisa with Nolan gone. I do wish they would have done a bit better with Tommy, I didn’t like his character being killed off, but I hoped maybe they could have done a bit more with him relative to Irisa’s mental state. Especially if they were you know, in love, etc and him not just being a passing fancy.
Some was done with that, but, I felt like there should have been more personally.
The show really grew on me. Three of the hottest women on t.v as well. Renew
Folks – season 4 ain’t happening. They wrapped it up in the finali of season 3. At that’s how it felt. Syfy has a history of nevertheless truly ending series and this will be another one.
Love this sci fi series for its well developed alien species and cross over of spirituality and science. True, there is an element of melodrama bordering on soap opera, but isn’t that what TV is for? Please keep the show alive for a 4th season!!
At least a 4th season so we have a proper final!!
I enjoyed this past season and watched every episode. Interesting characters, decent subplots, good acting and staging. I am the over 65 age demographic and I do hope there is a season 4.
I never thought the show was that good but their was not any good ScFi on that were any good so I started watching it again and it grew on me and now it is over. We need a good ScFi series to watch. To me Stargate Atlantis was the best ever made. Star Trek was really good also including all the different Star Trek series. Defiance got better toward the end. It is as if the writers made it better because ratings were down. So why not write a better show and not wait for ratings to drop off.… Read more »
Defiance – been a dedicated viewer since Day 1. I do not wish to see it cancelled. So few good sci-fi weekly shows are on the air right now, that I would truly miss this one. Reality shows suck and sit coms lose their appeal quickly. It is refreshing to never know from one week to the next what to expect from the characters. Will Nathan return after a 3-4 year journey with Mae? Will Alak remarry? Will Amanda wait for him? And what about Conner and Berlin? Do they finally get married and have in-law problems? And of course,… Read more »
You comment bring up so many good points and help me to recall so many characters and possibilities that were never explored but might have been. Well done. I enjoyed reading!
Defiance is definitely a series that should continue to entertain for a 4th season but from what i see the series finally came and went.
Defiance is a wonderfully imaginative sci-fi series. The writing and acting are excellent with very emotionally-compelling characters. I believe it is the best quality show on the Sy-Fy Channel since Battlestar Gallatica went off the air . If the management “bean counters” cancel Defiance, they will be demonstrating that striving for excellence is unimportant to their value system …..SO SAY WE ALL !
Television series exist to sell advertising, advertising comes only through viewership. If nobody watches the show, nobody will buy advertising and the show gets cancelled. That’s the whole of their value system. That is the whole point of television. Stop pretending otherwise.
So say you. Not me. Ergo not all. It’s over and it has nothing to do with the management but wether viewers appreciate the quality you articulated so well to tune in to watch. You have it bass ackwards honey. 🙂 Like every other profit driven company they depend on revenues and if their aren’t enough viewers to support revenue streams programs get canned. I’m sorry to be pedantic but your wrong to blame the bean counters. The Sci-Fy channel isn’t Public Television.
I didn’t notice Cephus’ reply. It was much more concise than mine. Sorry to be redundant. I’m sure you got the message though.
Best show on SyFy . I hope it comes back for AT LEAST a 4th season
