You’re a bad dog baby, but while I still want you around, the Alphabet Network apparently differs. ABC has cancelled the Downward Dog TV show after just one season. Creator Samm Hodges announced the bad news on Twitter, tonight. Excuse us while we get a newspaper and swat ABC on the nose.
An ABC sitcom, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Co-Creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen Confirm ABC Has Cancelled Downward Dog
The good news is, Hodges tweeted that he and Killen aren’t giving up on the Downward Dog TV series. Check it out.

In it, Hodges says he and Killen are committed to finding a new home for the sitcom, so all hope is not yet lost.

Downward Dog: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Downward Dog is averaging a 0.84 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.19 million viewers. It’s not the lowest performing ABC TV show, but it didn’t make a big impression.
What do you think? Should the Downward Dog TV show be cancelled or renewed for season two? Let us know, below.
This is a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! 🙁
I am furious with ABC right now. I am not sure if I will ever watch ABC again for doing this. I love “How To Get Away With Murder”, “Scandal” etc. but when you boycott a network, that means you will have to sacrifice shows you like to make a point. This is the only comedy show I watch, “Downward Dog”.
The live ratings average a 0.80(as of this writing) which isn’t brutal. but isn’t good. The Carmichael Show averages that right now, and has lots of episodes left. Downward Dog was advertised, but they aren’t going to advertise it every single minute. I don’t know if this was a bad decision, but FOX renewed lots of shows with ratings worse than this.
I kind of liked the show it was growing on me. The one thing that made me crazy was the voice of the dog. If it was voiced by someone else with a little more enthusiasm it would have been much better.
The voice of the dog was PERFECT! It was what made Martin so endearing.
Of course this had to be cancelled. It was much too quirky and the cast resembled The Walking Masses from Main Street US urban junkyard. How were the pin thin, botox pulled, plastic surgeon rebuilt lampreys from Hollywood and NYC to find “display” time? Golly gee, doesn’t everyone know that dogs can’t really talk! Unbelievable that plot would be foisted upon highly mobile people and their communicator toys. I guess we can hope for Nick At Night to acquire the rights. Really now viewers, did you truly believe entertainment would triumph over revenue!?
I have never written to a TV Network before. But I am SO angry at ABC for cancelling this smart, relevant, touching show, I just had to do something. With all the absolute inane junk on network TV, I cannot believe this show is being cancelled. ABC didn’t give this show time to be seen, nor did they advertise it. I didn’t even know about it until my daughter told me to watch 2 weeks ago. My husband and I have been binge watching the episodes we already missed. We posted the show on our Facebook and told friends and… Read more »
We LOVE Downward Dog and we are so sad about the cancellation. Any shows that are witty, smart and written well tend to be cancelled. REALLY BAD MOVE ABC?
Noooooooooooo, please don’t cancel!!! I love the dogs take on life’s happenings. Maybe another network will continue with Downward Dog? I am sad that it is cancelled.
i am sooooooo sad………….i love this show…………..please find a new home !! this was such a feel good show !! we need martin in our lives weekly – he puts a smile on your face :):)
Good riddance, this show was boring, good call abc
You must mean: “good call viewing audience.”
Loved this unique show from the start, and look forward to seeing it another network with the smarts to keep it going. Just one more good reason to stop watching the Already Been Cancelled channel altogether.
We get “reboots” of terrible 1970’s garbage (like The Gong Show).. but when something UNIQUE, funny and heartwarming comes along like Downward Dog -ABC trashes it. Any sense in this?!
Hey…The Gong Show sucks too!
I started watching this show and liked it for the first 15 minutes. Then they threw in sexual content and it immediately lost any family-friendliness it started out with. Couldn’t watch it after that. Without that stuff, it would have been something the whole family could watch.
It was one episode and they didn’t even show anything.
Now that is very disappointing news indeed. Why is it when a television program shows even an ounce of creativity, wit, great story, excellent acting…and fine, fine comedy, it gets bloody well cancelled? I don’t think the ‘powers that be’ realise that some of us have brains, and are smart enough to understand, and enjoy, the subtleties of shows like Downward Dog!! Nope, they’ll just throw another stupid ‘reality’ show, or talk show in the bag….and wonder why television is becoming a wasteland.
It’s a cute show! Seriously why are the good ones getting cancelled??!! Hope somebody picks this show up!!
I said it before – I just found Downward Dog – THIS WEEK !! I did not know anything about it – found it by accident, and I LOVE Downward Dog. And now it has been cancelled. People are afraid to watch new shows until they are established, because they don’t want to FALL IN LOVE with a new show and have it CANCELLED !!!! I sure hope that someone picks it up – it is SO DAMN GOOD>
mary, I love it too! I’ve watched it from the beginning and was hooked. I can’t believe ABC would cancel such a good show; we need to complain. I think I’ll write to ABC now. For all dog lovers everywhere this show is a must! I get the biggest kick out of Martin and Nan.
We liked, no, loved it, so, of course ‘they’ cancelled it. Now where will Martin go..he is a rescue dog. Not enough good shows these days.
If someone picks it up, eliminate the overtly sexual content and I’ll watch it….and recommend it to kids.
Whoever gave me a thumbs down: You didn’t think there was sexual content?
Dear Pat let me be the first to inform you that not every show on TV has to be made for kids adults like entertainment too and it’s soccer moms like you that do their best to baby down every show on Tv like other bill paying adults don’t deserve entertainment as well if you need something for your kids to watch there’s Disney ABC family Nickelodeon Cartoon Network in a cast of other networks and that works for them to watch This is an a kids show downward dog doesn’t have any children in it it’s about single leg… Read more »
When you have a show about a dog’s point of view, it becomes a children’s show, whether or not you like it.
Wow! George Orwell’s Animal Farm was about pigs, horses and other farm animals. I guess you would read that to third graders! Don’t mean to be too contentious, but you have a remarkably narrow p.o.v.
A show can be maturely written with out being perverse. Shame so many TV writers or viewers can’t get that.
I think you miss the point. The fact that it stars a dog doesn’t make it a “kids'” show. I have pretty sophisticated taste–way too sophisticated for the reality shows and endless iterations of genre shows that form most t.v. fare–and I adore this show. Adults have the right to a heart-warming show just for them!
