You’re a bad dog baby, but while I still want you around, the Alphabet Network apparently differs. ABC has cancelled the Downward Dog TV show after just one season. Creator Samm Hodges announced the bad news on Twitter, tonight. Excuse us while we get a newspaper and swat ABC on the nose.
An ABC sitcom, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Co-Creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen Confirm ABC Has Cancelled Downward Dog
The good news is, Hodges tweeted that he and Killen aren’t giving up on the Downward Dog TV series. Check it out.

In it, Hodges says he and Killen are committed to finding a new home for the sitcom, so all hope is not yet lost.

Downward Dog: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Downward Dog is averaging a 0.84 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.19 million viewers. It’s not the lowest performing ABC TV show, but it didn’t make a big impression.
What do you think? Should the Downward Dog TV show be cancelled or renewed for season two? Let us know, below.
They should put me in charge of predicting which new shows will be cancelled, because every time I really love a new show, feel invested in the characters and where life is going to take them, and think a new show is creative and fresh, it gets cancelled. Evidently my taste is different from the average American because I do not enjoy tasteless trash, which is what most reality shows are. My dog, Murphy, and I loved watching Downward Dog together. Sigh. Another one bites the dust!
Please don’t cancel downward dog. This is one of the most sensitive shows I have seen in a long time. It:S for children, old and young. No violence, just alot of lessons to be learned, love and caring for each other. Alot of lessons to be learned on this silly little show. It made my week.
A lovely, gentle show about the complexities of communication, inter- and intra-species. Nan, Martin and Jason, so deeply linked though with such different and often conflicting perspectives on being. So enjoyed being with them — do bring them back.
I’m so sad! This show made me laugh and cry, and I liked it better than any of the shows currently on my “premium” channels. I don’t currently subscribe to any streaming services, but I’ll subscribe to the one that picks up Downward Dog!
Renew! Please don’t abandon DD (or the potential to air it other than on ABC). This is a well written, witty, quirky, wonderful series. The humor and underlying themes are refreshing and speak to all audiences. The writers/producers/cast offer top quality talent.
“…what if I could see myself the way my dog sees me? …Look at how beautiful you are…”
“I literally can’t quit her.”
Tremendous. Favorite show…please don’t go.
Very disappointed that my favorite show, Downward Dog, has been cancelled. It was so clever and everyone in it was wonderful. It was heart-warming at times and other times just laugh-out-loud funny. I really hope it gets picked up by another network.
Please don’t cancel this show!!!!
This was the first show in quite a while I looked forward to seeing. It was laugh out loud funny, moving, and sometimes just silly….but I loved Martin, Nan and Jason. They will be missed by my family. Maybe ABC should drop a reality show and bring Martin back.
Yet another premature cancellation of a complex and delightful creative piece of entertainment. How long will it take to realize people will initially watch a train wreck rather then sit through a concert? Thank goodness ABC wasn’t in charge of Hamilton since only a few people actually got to see it.
Save Downward Dog!!!!! You’ll be glad you did.
Please keep this show! There’s nothing else like it and it’s the best show ive seen in a long time. So creative and funny. We need more laughter in these times. Find a new home for it please.
I absolutely love Downward Dog! ABC is making a huge mistake cancelling it. To the producers, please don’t give up on the show and find it a new home. I’ll gladly follow wherever it ends up.
This is honestly the best show I’ve seen since I can remember. I’m devastated that it isn’t coming back for a second season. I love all the characters and Martin and Nan are so real and relatable. Please continue this show somehow!!!
Oh no! Could not wait to the next week to see this show. They keep all these
reality shows like the bachelor and bachelorette on. Unbelievable ABC, you are so wrong on this. Martin made our day in our household. Hope it gets picked up by another network.
I am devastated that this wonderful, smart funny show has been cancelled. I watch very little tv and I became hooked on Downward Dog. I hope that the show can come back in some form. I love Nan and Martin is so clever. This is some of the best writing done on network tv.
NO! I love Martin. We need these real shows with actual actors and writers who can plot a storyline. Otherwise I will eventually have to be on some dumb reality show because that will be all there is. And those shows are so fake it just irritates me to death. Please some other network pick this up and make it a go.
