You’re a bad dog baby, but while I still want you around, the Alphabet Network apparently differs. ABC has cancelled the Downward Dog TV show after just one season. Creator Samm Hodges announced the bad news on Twitter, tonight. Excuse us while we get a newspaper and swat ABC on the nose.
An ABC sitcom, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
Co-Creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen Confirm ABC Has Cancelled Downward Dog
The good news is, Hodges tweeted that he and Killen aren’t giving up on the Downward Dog TV series. Check it out.

In it, Hodges says he and Killen are committed to finding a new home for the sitcom, so all hope is not yet lost.

Downward Dog: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Downward Dog is averaging a 0.84 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.19 million viewers. It’s not the lowest performing ABC TV show, but it didn’t make a big impression.
What do you think? Should the Downward Dog TV show be cancelled or renewed for season two? Let us know, below.
This lovely, sweet show DESERVES a second chance! PLEASE find a way to bring it back. TV desperately NEEDS more shows like this.
Wow! I NEVER watch network sitcoms! But, I saw a mention of this show on a blog and thought I’d check it out on my computer since I am never around when stuff is scheduled on normal-people-schedule television (I can’t stay up past 8 on weeknights and have dogs, horses, cats, parrots to feed). I loved the show. Really loved it! Sam Hodges’ voice was perfect for Martin. I didn’t know he was one of the creators until I started checking the show out because I enjoyed it so much. I told all of my friends and family about it… Read more »
I loved the idea of this show but just could not get into it. I thought the dog was way too depressive and his voice was annoying. I guess that’s an unpopular view on this board, but it’s the truth. I suppose I’m not the target audience for this show, being that I’m almost 60. I have lived through many other talking animal shows and this one did not measure up. I never found Martin funny in the least and I wanted to find him that way. He was a real downer. The show was a very creative idea that… Read more »
Ronnie, I agree. I watched the entire short season and loved the rest of the cast. Especially the ‘boyfriend’ that used to be on Saving Hope. The concept was amazing and I liked the dog but didn’t love his personality and the constant repetition of the word ‘like’ drove me nuts each week. I think if they redid the show with a new voice and new attitude for Martin I would be over the moon. I’ve got dogs, volunteer at the local shelter and love most pet related shows but this was kinda depressing. And don’t get me started on… Read more »
If you people find it depressing, you are missing the entire point, of this WONDERFUL refreshing show!
BRING IT BACK!!!!
This show really grew on me-so unique, funny and entertaining. Please don’t cancel it
Whatever you do, whatever it takes, please, please find another home for Downward Dog. I’m not a big fan of network programming but this show is different. It is unique, insightful, beautiful and incredibly touching. I just wish that my dog would have the same “tenacity of love” that Martin has for Nan.
Not happy at all hearing that ABC cancelled Downward Dog…..So hoping Downward Dog gets picked up….really enjoyed this show!
Best show to come around in quite a long time. Refreshingly smart! Eight episodes with literally no commercial support (plus changing airing night after 1st episode) was a stupid move by ABC. My husband and I most sincerely hope it gets picked up somewhere.
Just pay Martin whatever he’s asking for and renew the show.
damn; another great show is dropped by ABC. as a dog lover my whole life I really connected with this show, my dog loved it also. he would sit next to me and my wife and zone it on the comedy.
I loved it. It hit home after losing my 15 year old dog. Hope the show finds another home and if not I hope the dog has a loving home he can enjoy the rest of his life.
Absolutely loved Downward Dog. Quoted Martin on Facebook regularly! Got several friends hooked on it because they hadn’t seen any promos. Now we are ALL sad to lose our time with Martin and Nan. I feel so ripped off to find a little piece of joy and then have it snatched away. Any possible way it can be brought back????
My hound and I will sit up, beg, roll over, speak and fetch for this show!!
I totally loved Downward Dog, and Martins perception of his life. I watched every show with my dog Jelly. I would always DVR the show so if I was busy or not around to watch I wouldn’t miss Nan putting up with Martins shenanigans. When I watched I’d be laughing out loud and Jelly’s tail would just start wagging at hearing me laugh. Because I recorded Nan & Martin I saved it so I could watch it again with my Mom so then she started DVRing DD. We couldn’t wait till the next episode to see what Martin might be… Read more »
I absolutely LOVED Downward Dog. It was the cleverest show on TV, not just because of Martin (whose eye rolls made my husband ((a tough audience)) and me laugh out loud, but Nan’s story. She was a real person with a believable life. I need to know what happens to her next, and of course we’re on pins and needles about the Martin/Pepper feud. I hadn’t watched an ABC show, except Modern Family, in years. For all of us who looked forward to Martin’s philosophical take on life, please resurrect Downward Dog.
This show was addictive. Liked it to begin with, but the more I watched, the more I absolutely fell in love with all the characters. Rarely watch ABC except for the news so I was impressed that they added a show that was so refreshing and enjoyable. Think their execs are very nearsighted and don’t have a spec of creativity in their bones. I hope this show finds a home that will truly appreciate something unique that makes us think and laugh.
I, along with many others, did not get to see the series finale because Spectrum Cable was out the night of the finale, therefore, ABC should take that into account when looking at ratings for that night. Give the show another chance.
