Last week, when it was announced that Syfy had renewed Eureka for a sixth season of just a half dozen episodes, there were reports and speculation that the cable channel was ending the TV series.
Syfy programming head Mark Stern assured Eureka fans that that this wasn’t the case and said, “Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia have brought a creative vitality to Eureka that has kept it fresh and inventive. Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise.”
Now, the cable channel has changed their tune completely. Syfy has now cancelled plans for a sixth season of Eureka entirely. On top of that, it doesn’t sound very likely that a spin-off or other continuation are in the works either. The cast and crew are currently finishing up shooting season five and that will be the end of the TV show.
The cable channel has released this statement regarding the cancellation: “After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.”
It sounds like the writers have had time to craft a series finale for Eureka but we’ll have to wait until it airs next summer before we know if it’s a satisfying one.
What do you think? Are you sad to hear that Eureka has been cancelled? Do you think you’ll be satisfied by the series finale?

I knew SciFi was DEAD on this channel when they changed the name to Syfy. It is no longer a scifi channel but a wrestling/reality channel. They are canceling all the good shows, SGU, and now Eureka. I really thought when Comcast bought NBC it would be different…oh yeah it’s different, they are axeing the show even quicker.
Oh, how I wish I had hit the Powerball and maybe bought this channel. I have a better chance of seeing SGU come back then that ever happening though…lol
It’s sad to see it end! What will Comic Con be with wait Cafe Diem?
I’m very sad about this. Eureka is the last best television show on Syfy. What will I watch on it after this? Hmm, well, probably Sanctuary unless(/until) they cancel it. And that not-very-entertaining-but-watchable U.S. version of Being Human. Can’t think of anything else. And that’s a real shame, since I spent a good portion of my daily viewing hours on the Sci-Fi Channel back in the day. I’ll miss Eureka, same as I miss the Stargate shows and BattleStar Galactica. They better of had time to bring it to a satisfying end… seems kind of odd that the Christmas 2012… Read more »
This is one odd cancellation annoucement. They scrape six episodes, but add 12 more plus a Christmas episode for 2012. I am confused. Is it cancelled or not?
Patti » They’d previously ordered season five which is being filmed now. Those will air next year. No more after that.
NBC ruins every station they acquire! High paid executives making bad decisions will be the end of this network! The people @ Syfy know nothing about Science fiction. They should changed its name to Syfy-NOT!!!
This is a big mistake! You need to continue to film this show! I would not be watching anything else on your network if it was not for Eureka! I may quit watching the other two shows if you cancel it due to a lack of confidence to continue a show I’m invested in!!!
.Just what I expect from syfy. Sci-fi wouldn’t do this stuff. They continuously cancel every good show they have to run a crappy reality show instead. Then they blame the cancellation on ratings after they schedule it off the air for close to a year or change nights and times. Farscape, bsg, caprica, etc. When they cancel warehouse 13 I will say goodbye to the channel altogether and I give the new BSG one season at best no matter how good it is
Once again, SyFY disappoints it’s viewers. I can’t beleive they are going to let Eureka go. Sad.
I am sooo upset over this. I am not @ all interested in watching some lady take care of her kids, some stuck up ******* fight ….. the shows they have on now are crap. This is the one shows that my husband & I really enjoy. We even sign along during the intro. Just a Wonderful show over all. SYFY wake up ….. this is a HUG mistake !!!!
Sadly, it’s all about money. They can make several reality and “let’s go explore a spooky thing” shows for what it cost to make Eureka.
I take full blame though. Whatever I like the most is never far from the axe.
Im done with SyFy… they don’t care about the science fiction audience.
Well, I am now expecting to see the end of Warehouse 13, Haven, Sanctuary and any other show on SyFy I liked…
SyFy channel, the network that was full of promise that were unfulfilled due to poor management decisions.
Wow, I wish I had the money to start up a network… I wonder if I should even get interested in the next BSG spinoff they have coming up???
Grandizer they have renewed warehouse 13 for next season so we got that for another season
Sorry Samuel, I didn’t make the sarcasm more noticeable there… 🙂 But the fact that SyFy has a pool of actors that they seem ONLY to draw on is a problem… How many shows have you seen the same people in all the time… I can name MANY people form the SG universes that have been on more then 4-5 other shows on SyFy. It gets tedious watching an actor / actress play a different character so soon after playing another one. I knew the Tollen were gone for good when Sam’s love interest turned up on SG-A as Wier’s… Read more »
I have to disagree with you about them reusing actors. The actors reused in every series are GREAT actors who put their all into their new parts and make me believe they’re someone completely different. Given that, it’s comforting and fun for me to see the same faces over and over again… at least I know the actors are getting work.
one of my favorite shows. will truly miss it. i hate reality shows!
I would be more upset if I wasn’t already used to having 9 months out of the year without Eureka.
This is a Lie!! Eureka Not was cancelled CHECK YOUR INFO
Pablo » Sorry, it’s true.
