There won’t be a third season of Extant but this isn’t the end of Halle Berry’s relationship with CBS. The summer series has been cancelled but Berry is now executive producing a legal drama that’s in development for the network.
Extant, began when astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) returned to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. For season two, the cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Pierce Gagnon, Grace Gummer, and David Morrissey.
The first season of Extant underperformed for the network and averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.15 million viewers. They brought it back but a lot of changes were made to the series. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to help. The second season, which concluded last month, averaged a 0.7 in the demo with 4.70 million.
Despite the big declines in the ratings, there was talk of moving forward with a third season, mostly because of Berry’s star power. Ultimately the decision was made to end the show.
“I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant,” said Berry. “This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly’s journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there. It was my first foray into episodic television, and I’m excited to continue my relationship with CBS, producing more compelling stories through my 606 Films production banner.”
In a statement, CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller, said, “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the ‘Extant’ story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant’ played an important role in expanding CBS’s lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series, and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”
That next project is called Legalease and will center on a biracial lawyer from Chicago who follows a case to New Orleans. She ends up partnering with a good ol’ boy attorney while working in a biased justice system. It’s unclear if Berry will star in the new show or stay behind-the-scenes.
What do you think? Did you like the Extant TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Which season did you prefer?
My best friend and I are heart broken. This was our favourite show and we were SOO looking forward to season 3!
I’m from the Uk. Brilliant brilliant Extant. Loved every minute of 1 and 2 I’m sad but glad that there not making another one. It is better to finish on top. Too many of the Si-fi series go on to far. Ms Berry has done the right thing. Brilliant ending. Want to see more from these producers.
Of course we’re upset Extant was canceled and getting sick of CBS stringing people along only to leave their viewers in the lurch after getting them hooked. That’s no way to treat viewers if you want them to be loyal and interested in their shows. We won’t be watching any CBS summer pilots.
I am very upset. My husband and I loved it. Are they at least going to wrap it up? Please don’t leave your fans hanging!!!!!!
I like the show. The second season å lot better than the first. I was hoping for å third. Especially with Mr Morgan in it!
I’m really damn pissed that there no season 3.. I’m left wondering! that sucks.. at least they should of had common courtesy to have one episode explaining the whole plot.. now I’m irritated it’s like reading a book with the pages ripped out I’m left guessing..
I don’t know if I care to watch new shows there are too many cancelled, before ending the stories. I thought she was a big enough star to finish this story, very disappointed !!
I’m fed up with series ending before their time. We were hooked on this one. Don’t viewers count?
Alas no, Karen… only the almighty advertising dollars count! 🙁
Thats terrible! But true. Its about time viewers have a vote!
We were really looking forward to the third season!! 🙁
Of COURSE we want a third season! Network execs need to pull their “radomes” from their “exhaust areas” and listen to viewers/Nielsen contributors like they did in the “old days”! This is the jet age people, if you can’t keep up, TAKE NOTES!
Totally agree!
Wow love the show, this is a perfect sci-fi series i ever saw. Many points on …Why do i like it . This series is genuine compared to other sci-fi i have saw before. The facts is this show has open my mind on what might happen to us if we allow techology to rule without limits. ”For example: we are using android now soon everthing will change in such the way this series prediction image’ are” Already in Japan there are enforcing robots to work for them how come. Just Look at us now ….more of us are using Google… Read more »
Want a third season
Ditto, folks! It’s a cryin’ shame when the “lame-stream” networks cancel thought-provoking winners like EXTANT, and opt to go with some of the CRAP that they feel we should REALLY be watching! (The almighty “advertising dollars” win again! )
It isn’t really so offensive being TALKED to like a “2-year old” as it is when those with a little power, i.e., the network big-wigs, start LISTENING like one!
I have followed the show and thought it was very imaginative with a lot of twist and who doesn’t like the twist in the story. Future aspect was nice and very believable and season two topped season one on the story and acting. I would have loved to see a season three to see what the writers can imagine. I am sorry to see it cancel – It is so much better that the shows they have on now.
I LOVED Extant & really sad that it was canceled after 2 seasons. I was hoping for a third season or at least a mini series type wrap up of the story. I believe that not enough promoting, advertising, etc was done to help this extremely imaginative series find its audience! I myself knew nothing of this show & just “happened” across it in the Amazon TV catalog while browsing. I still do not understand why I’d never heard anything about this show. When I saw it in Amazon Prime, the first season was almost over! As someone that probably… Read more »
