Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
I loved the show, an I am a christian to, I am tired of getting close to a new show an then it is canxled, I thin i’ll wait a yr befor I get hooked on another show. I’ll just watch the same old shows.
Are you kidding me????? This was my new favorite show…even my fiance liked to watch it with me!!! I can’t believe they aren’t giving it another season! Who is in charge of this because they are either really stupid or scared of these crazy religious idiots!
Another thing – now that Desperate Housewives is over, and GCB is off the air – I guess my Sunday nights are freed up again. In a way, thanks ABC for not having anything worth watching. I’ll get a lot more done. Ha!
I was just checking the TV schedule for tonight and didn’t see GCB. Then I Googled GCB and saw it was cancelled. I agree with what everyone has said here. GCB was a smart, funny show and I looked forward to it every week. The characters were great – Annie Potts really hit her stride on GCB. I loved Kirsten Chenowitz’s character. I hope the station rethinks the show – it’s funny, great characters, great story lines – (I wanted to get one of those Dieting with Jesus meals – hilarious!). Come on – we need something besides cop shows,… Read more »
I was really sadden by the news GCB was cancelled. I watched it faithfully everyweek and if I couldn’t I would record it. It’s ridicoulous how ABC can keep all that reality crap on going for seasons but when true comedy and drama comes available it’s gets canned. This is the second show I really liked in 6 months get cancelled by ABC. PanAm was also cancelled, I’m starting to loose my faith in ABC. Also keep in mind that GCB was in competion with a lot of shows that were also going on maybe the day was off should… Read more »
My boyfriend and i are both human christians and there are very few shows we agree on to watch togeather and actually both enjoy and laugh out loud at!! GCB was the first one we both would look forward to all week. Common sence should tell people who are offened that tv is an exageration of reality and anyone who really is offended must jus have a very guilty concious. It not fair that vampires and witches are accepted without contoversy but put being christian on tv is taboo???? WTF??? The charecters were imperfect people like ALL people!!! Eventhough they… Read more »
I loved the show and tuned in faithfully. As a active women in the church world, I thought it was true to its form. People act exactly like the character did on the show; which is why I found it refreshing to see it publicly displayed. I was hoping maybe if people saw themselves on TV acting ridiculous, then maybe they would be inspired to seek a transformation within themselves. What is sad is how people complain about how Christians are portrayed on TV, but no one seems to care in reality.
Wow! This was a great show … perfect to replace Desperate Housewives. I’m a Christian and it was in no way offensive. The show was great and the casting was wonderful. Nobody should take it too seriously … relax, laugh and have fun! I really hope the show gets picked up by another network or cable. ABC you made the wrong call! WE WANT GCB!!!
Wow! Can’t believe it made so many that upset to have it cancelled I really enjoyed this show and as a Christian I did not find it offensive. Get a sense of humor people seriously!
what GCB cancelled!!! Best show on tv this year by far. I could not wait till sunday to watch the next episode. It is laugh out loud comedy that my husband and I can watch together. ABC you suck!!!
I am so sorry to see this show cancelled. It was ‘satire’ on two-faced people, not Christians in particular. There are scheming, two-faced, back stabbers in every society and this show was a hoot in every sense of the word. I loved all the characters. Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, all of them were great.
I loved GCB and looked forward to watching every week. So bummed that it has been cancelled. I’m Christian and don’t understand what the big hoopla is over Christian protest. Get over yourself. So much reality garbage on TV and season after season of Bachelors and Bachelorettes dating and sometimes sleeping with 25 people at a time and Christians are ok with that? It boggles. GCB was a good time and so much fun to watch. I disgusted that it was cancelled after only 10 episodes.

very frustrating, my wife and I both waited for each episode to come out, bring it back
The show was hysterical and with a great ensemble cast. I don’t want to accuse Christian protestors for taking the show down, but I think media has shown us that religious organizations are determined and incessant when it comes to something they are opposed to. GCB didn’t poke fun of Christianity or the Church as much as it did at Texas. The story line took place in the House of God, but that was about it. My curiosity lies in whether the anti-GCB protestors actually viewed the pilot episode or did they just start the attack based upon the title.… Read more »
