Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
Loved the show. Not fair that they canceled it without a season finale. It was a good show. I am a Christian and it didn’t offend me. I hope it wasn’t canceled because of it offending people. This show was actually a reality. People are like this, even if they say they are Christians. No one is perfect. Please bring it back.
WHAT???? REALLY??? Go figure, you get to know these characters and they just swipe’em because some ppl have an opinon! Guess what I have one tooo and I say KEEP IT! KEEP IT! KEEP IT!
Thank you
GCB – Well written, funny, great story lines and cast. Of course ABC was going to cancel it. Tuned into this show faithfully every week. No pun intended. I recall ABC was contemplating cancelling Castle after its first season. Look at the mistake that would have been as this show, I believe goes into its fifth season.
No wonder cable networks are doing so well.
This show did not Mock faith but in fact the opposite, for starters is a hugely funny show that will teach you what is right and what is wrong with the Human thinking of what should or should not be judged. Not to give this show a longer run is a business mistake not to mention the opportunity to enjoy a well written comedy with talented actors.
I loved this show! Please don’t tell me that ABC will try to sell us on another “reality” or “game” show. All I can say is–thank God for other networks and cable channels. ABC is only one option and will not be mine!
I can’t believe that this show got cancelled! What we get to look forward to more reality crap!
I don’t understand how a show like GCB can affect faith. First off, it is an excellent comedy. Almost watching a jaded reality of how some christians can be. Hey before you say anything, admit the fact that it happen. But the humor in this show, is positive, not demeaning at all. Pure entertainment. It’s almost like a breather for me everytime I watch this show. I am so disappointed that something this unique gets cancelled or is lost to us forever because of a lot of reasons. Yep, I know it didn’t give the revenue expected of it but… Read more »
What is wrong with you people! This show is great! The only thing wrong with it was it was only on once a week!
There was no reason to cancel this show. It was well written, it was funny and the characters were strong. They really should give this show another shot. I believe that if given another chance this show will come out with guns blazing just as they did the first go round.
I really loved this show too! It is so sad that it won’t be returning. I looked forward to watching it every week and was even sad it was such a short season!
I hope some other station picks it up.
Now you know why cable is whipping network butt!
I am so very disappointed that GCB is canceled!!! The show was so funny with lines like “cleavage makes your cross hang straight”. What’s not funny about that?! The shows I like almost always get canceled. It wasn’t sacrireligious or blasphemous – just funny!! I wish ABC would reconsider and put it back on, but I’m sure if it wasn’t making enough money, they won’t. Bye ladies and gents of GCB. You were wonderful!!!!!!!
Sorry Newt. You’ll have to find other ways to mock Christians. Shouldn’t take you long to do so.
omg!!! i looved this shooow!!! how can i t be cancelled its one of my favorites 🙁 soooo not good ABC cancelling good shows and leaving crapy ones!
Please bring GCB back, my husband is a hard core Soldier. But we laughed so hard…. I think all who loved GCB we should send peanuts to ABC to boycott that they cancelled this show and maybe they will bring it back!
