Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
It is a shame: that show was a pearl. You US citizens should loose this habit to cancel a show before checking its success in other countries. PLEASE RENEW GCB! A religion that takes itself too seriously generates terrorists.
I can’t believe they cancelled this show!! Let it play!! Renew renew renew!!
Love GCB. So sad it is cancelled. I am a Christian and did not find it offensive. Please reconsider. Can it just be renamed or something. I am going miss Carlene and the girls.
I am thoroughly disgusted that ABC cancelled GCB – my favorite new show of the year and did the same with Pan Am which was my 2nd love. Putting GCB on Sunday nights opposite Mad Men was ludicrous and the ratings would have been through the roof had they moved it to a different night. I spread the word about GCB because it was the best damn comedy writing and acting in a troupe that I have seen in 25 years. Miriam Shor was so hilarious in her parody that I found myself bonding with strangers in bars about it.… Read more »
I can not believe GCB was cancelled. I love this show and looked forward to watching it every Sunday. After Desperate Housewives went off the air, I thought at least I have something to look forward to watching on Sunday nights. Give us back GCB….life is too serious and I need something funny to laugh at.
I am a Christian and was never “offended” by this show! It was hilarious and I enjoyed seeing something different on tv for a change. I watch very little tv and was a little surprised I enjoyed it so much because it was just so ridiculous, but it was a lot of fun. I will miss it! Now I will only watch Top Chef. Dancing with the Stars and Project Runway again. I never watch ANYTHING on ABC, NBC, CBS or Fox (except DWTS). This was a bad move ABC! So dissappointed.
I would love to see this show renewed. It is the epitome of entertainment! It is well written complete with snappy dialogue, has a great cast and isn’t afraid to poke fun at many “sacred” subjects i.e. religion, marriage. I hope ABC rethinks their decision because this show was truly a breath of fresh air!
My husband and I enjoyed watching and laughing at GCB. The storylines were hysterical and the characters were endearing! I have been looking for the new episode and found this website. I am so disappointed. There is nothing funny to watch..especially on ABC, NBC, or CBS.
This is sooooo disappointing!! My husband and I loved GCB!!! Please bring it back!!!
I am really upset they have cancelled GCB. I enjoyed the show and wished they would bring it back. Seems like they cancel the shows that are liked and continue the shows that really shouldn’t be on TV.
This show was a hoot. Demeaning to Christians? It’s like Dan Quayle being irate over Murphy Brown. Honey, if you’re a good Christian you wouldn’t be concerned about it. Ralax. It’s just TV. If TV depicted real life we’d all be bored to death. I hope the show is picked up by a non-network entity. It deserves a second life.
Sunday night’s GCB was my guilty pleasure!! I loved this show, it made me laugh for the entire hour and was just what I needed at the end of a long week!! I wish there was a way to let ABC know just how much we (my whole famly) enjoyed this show.
As a Christian, I can honestly say that any Christian who’s offended by GCB needs to GET A SENSE OF HUMOR! I loved this show, and am hugely disappointed. Word was just starting to spread; they didn’t even give it a chance! Who do we write to??
This quickly became my favorite show!! I told friends about it after the finale, all eager to see the next season, only to find it canceled! It was so funny and the writing and acting was superb. Carlene cracked me up. I don’t watch much tv but enjoyed these 10 episodes. More!!! People need to stop being so offended. It’s funny!
Make a season 2! PLEASE! My husband and I loved GCB! It was the only show we could ever agree to watch! We look forward to it and never missed an episode.
