Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
I love this show…and I am definitely (1) a Christian; (2) a woman; (3) live in TEXAS…and am DAMN proud of it!

I think abc is making a big mistake. GCB is very funny show with great actress and actors. I hope you change your mind and give another chance or hope you sell to another channel so I continue to watch the show.
I liked this show alot and I don’t even watch much TV at all. Please bring it back. I liked that I could enjoy it for a whole hour too. There are always things on TV that people can call offensive. This was not, especially being on a Sunday night @9pm.
I liked the show. I thought it was very funny! I hate to see it go. There are so few shows that I like, and it seems the ones I like never make it for very long! They keep making all those dumb reality shows!
I cannot believe such a funny show has been cancelled. The cast was perfect. I rarely watch any show faithfuly anymore. I never missed an episode. I hope ABC has a change of heart on this one. I am a devout Christian. There was some things maybe people can be offended by but it was presented in a humorous fashion. I was not offended and think there is far more violence and sex that sells and nobody complains. Please bring GCB back!!!
Before GCB was aired, I would watch old “I Love Lucy” or “Fraiser” or “King of Queen’s” to get a laugh. I talked a friend of mine, who is all business, to watch GCB with me ……even he laughed and asked when it is usually on so he could watch it! I am a christian and expected some to object, but I have also known some ‘ladies’ just like the GCB gals. Good for some to see themselves. What a shame, good show, loads of laughs! Would love to see it come back!
I loved this show, please renew do not let the religious views of others dictate what some people want to watch, if people have a problem with the show then dont watch it. It was funny, it made me laugh a rare quality with the shows that are on tv now
I thought the show was hilarious, and networks need to pay less attention to the religious right. People need to get a sense of humor.
