Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
I loved this show – I was amazed every week how it seemed to fly under the radar – the jokes were terrific and poking fun at all things Christian and American made this Canadian laugh out loud – which is a tricky thing to do as I am a comedy producer. However – as it is with most clever television – I’m not surprised that the masses didn’t get it. Too bad!
I just found out the show had been cancelled! Every week I check the listings, and there is something else on, a special of some kind, so I kept waiting impatiently for the next Sunday! Why cancel this funny, so true to life show? It is certainly much better than anything else in at that time period! You had a good replacement for DH, and you let it go! Hopefully, another network will pick it up. Shame on ABC!
Loved this show!!!! Bring it back.
Love this show!!! Very sad it is not coming back on.
GCB is really a funny tongue-in-cheek “Dallas”. I would prefer GCB over Dallas any day.
I was shocked to find out that GCB has been cancelled as my DVR is set to record all the episodes only cause I wasn’t sure when the next season was to start. Christians have got to stop being fake about there life. All these things happen and whether you admit it or not it does. It was a funny show and hoping that ABC brings GCB back with the same cast. Don’t leave us hanging in the air with what happens to this group of ladies. PLEASE!
I cant believe they canceled this show as it was a good comedy and I loved Annie Potts.
I ABSOLUTELY loved the show GCB. I got sooooo many people hooked on it. I think ABC is making a HUGE mistake canceling the show 🙁
Glad it was cancelled. This is offensive to Christians.
The title implies this is the way Christians are. This is not a true representation of a Christian. If you found an appropriate title, such as Good B’s or Fake C’s, you might have better luck with the advertising. There will always be hypocrites, this is to be expected. As a christain I enjoyed the show, but I would like the world to know Christians are to be forgiving, loving, and full of a peace that only comes from Christ. I do believe Christ has a sense of humor, as long as it lifts you up not bring you down.
Disrespectful name did the show in…..many more did not watch it for its poor title than those that would watch it. Why degrade Christians all the time.
Bring it back now!!!!!!!
Seriously? Scandal looks ridiculous! With so many dramas on, a good comedy is in high demand. GCB had me in stitches! Please bring it back. I’ll tell all my friends to watch.
PLEASE BRING GCB BACK!!!! I AM A STRONG CHRISTIAN WOMAN AND PROUD OF IT! I LOVE THIS SHOW AND AM DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE CANCELLATION!! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!! ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER!!!
PLEASE BRING BACK THE SHOW….. VERY UPSET ABC CANCELLED IT. COULD NOT WAIT FOR SUNDAY NIGHT!!!! AT LEAST PUT IT ON HBO OR CINAMAX …… SOMETHING!!!!
