Lone Star: FOX TV Show Cancelled After Two Episodes

by Trevor Kimball, September 28, 2010

Lone StarWe all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.

Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.

The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.

Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.

Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.

Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.

What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?

UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

I was also awaiting the third episode of Lone Star yesterday. They could have at least aired the episodes that were already taped! The show was very suspenseful with almost a Nip/tuck feel to it. I think the show would have done better on FX, and without having to be up against Monday Night Football which I am always flipping over to. I hope Fox had some market research people reading this!

It was by far the best show on TV ….. thats what happens when FOX does not promote like NBC did with The Event and ABC did with Dancing with the Stars which along with Monday Night Football is a tough time slot. I hope they let another station pick it up because it would be the top rated show on a Tuesday or Wednesday night

I thought the show was great, and was looking forward to upcoming episodes. I don’t see why they didn’t at least give it a chance to develope, two shows was not enough time.

In my opinion what happened with this show was: wrong casting of characters, poor talent and bad direction. As I watched, I just could not believe the characters. They were “flat” with no believable performance. At no point did I believe them to be real but people going through motions. James Wolk and Jon Voight were fine but the others, especially Wolk’s father was way too intense for me. The performances were not real, not appropiate for what was going in, and even though you may have two good characters on a ahow, they can’t carry it by themselves. It… Read more »

Shame “lonestar” got cancelled. I was settling in to a good long run. Even DVRd MNF to watch it first run… I don’t watch FOX except for NFL & MLB. So this would have been my first serial on FOX. Btw, this is why I RARELY invest in a TV programming, the trigger finger is too quick. Murdoch makes enuf to let a show ride for 6 weeks. Geez, could have been the “next Dallas” if they gave it half a chance!

I’m really not surprised it got cancelled. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show but the minute I started watching it I could see where it would lose it’s viewers. I had to pay close attention to everything that went on to follow the plot and understand where the characters were coming from. Many people just don’t want to do that no matter how intriguing. So as happy as I was to see Lie to Me after House (I do love those too after all) I missed not seeing Lone Star. Perhaps if another channel picked it up or… Read more »

Liked it so well, I remembered to watch it this past Monday night, but it was already cancelled. Very disappointed! This series reminded me of Dallas with JR , but even better. Finally something different than all of the cop shows. I liked the cast too!

Good show with a lot of potential with sub plots. Good writing. If they were looking for the youth demographic they picked the wrong time slot.

I’m sorry to see this show go. FOX promoted Lone Star as a show about slime balls with no morals and I was even reluctant to watch. After the first episode I realized there was a lot more going on and it had the potential for a great series. FOX never gave it a chance. This leaves us with mostly crime shows

I was really looking forward to Lone Star last night – got all ready to watch, then Lie To Me came on. I went to look at the newspaper to see what happened; Nothing. I was so curious I googled the show and learned that it was cancelled. Couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a great show and wish they would have given it more time to catch on with the general public. Great actors, fresh ideas, unpredictable. Wow, wish they would at least show the rest of the episodes.

I think that it’s one thing to cancel the show, but it is something completely different to shelve the episodes already made and leave the story unfinished.
They must have pissed off aLOT of people. (or at least the 4 million people who watched it.)

Loved this show and I am SO disappointed that they’re canceling it. I had heard absolutely nothing about it and was not interested in watching, but did so for my husband and I found myself hooked. I cannot believe that the ratings were so low – this had the potential to be a great series!!!

Im disappointed that the series was cancelled as well, I was wondering why it didnt record on my DVR last night, i Guess FOX doesn’t know how to be patient with new shows that come out, I’m not a dancing with the stars fan either, if anything maybe put the series on one of FOX’s sub channels like FX or something 3 million viewers is still a lot of viewers
