Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I just watched the show on my dvr and was shocked to find out that was it. It wasn’t advertised. This just is wrong. However since the real Allison was on housewives of Beverly hills I don’t like the woman. She is rude. Now I love Patricia arquette.
I know that I will miss this show very much, like others I stayed home on Fridays to watch it. The last show was very, very disappointing could of shown all the girls grown up doing different things and have one of them working in the field of helping the police solve crimes while Allyson went to back to school and Joe became top boss were he worked. I also loved Ghost Whisper but I guess I’ll have to learn to love Cop shows.
What do I think of Medium being canceled??????……..Absolutely HORRIBLE!!!!!!!….. I have been so busy with family affairs that I was no not even aware that my FAVORITE series was to be canceled!!!!!! what’s even worse is that there is not one thing that any of us can do anything about it!!!!!…..How do I feel about the FINAL episode?……..I choose not to use the blatantly rude words which just might apply to this horriblynever ending conundrum!!!!!!! Oh,… but … We always have “Those …..Stupid…. “SIMPSONS’ FAMILY ” episodes that are continually being “re-encarnated”…… to add to the incipid ignorant waste of… Read more »
All I have to say is WTF. They took a show that was genuine and that people could truly relate to and messed it up. Thanks a lot for ruining my year already CBS.
I don’t watch the tabloid shows nor read the stories on the web and watch almost everything I do watch on my Tivo so I rarely do watch a commercial; so you can imagine my shock when I watched this episode of Medium and found out it was the series finally. I also had no idea the show even changed networks last year until I read this site tonight. I can’t believe they killed Joe off. What is wrong with these people. That makes it impossible to bring the show back if they ever realize how much of a mistake… Read more »
I’ve watched from the first episode. I LOVED that there was finally a show who showed a happy couple who were in love with each other. He wasn’t cheating, she wasn’t cheating, they weren’t secretly doing anything. They had a family and I LOVED that for once, there was a show the that let us watch a family that wasn’t falling apart, they worked on their marriage and lived to build a stronger family. I loved Medium. I am very sad it’s over. I thought the ending was beautiful. Everyone else is saying how much they hated it, it should… Read more »
OMG – I’ve been watching Medium since the first episode and thought it was a great show. Now all of a sudden I hear this was the last one ever to air. OMG – with all the crappy shows out there – this one was cancelled. I’m very dissappointed.
Good luck to all the wonderful actors in this series.
I was so sad that the Medium ended…it was a great show! It ended as well as it started…it was stunning, beautiful, loving, dramatic, and wonderful! I do not believe anyone can produce a better show than this so I don’t look forward to what lies ahead. My wish is for all the actors to know that they were apart of something spectacular and my family and I wish them all well!! We’ll miss all of the cast from The Medium!!
I LOVED THAT SHOW IT TRULEY WAS ONE OF THE BETTER SHOWS ON TV. I DID NOT KNOW THEY WHERE CANCELING THE SHOW SO IT WAS QUITE A SHOCK. I TRULEY FEEL LIKE I LOST PART OF MY FAMILY, I CRIED BUCKETS. I KNOW IT’S JUST TV BUT WHEN YOU WATCH A SHOW AS LONG AS I HAVE WATCHED THEY BECOME PART OF YOU’RE FAMILY. THE ENDING SUCKED THEY COULD HAVE COME UP WITH A BETTER ENDING. SUCKS
Do you really care what we think???? Why did they have to cancel the show on such short notice? It happened with LasVegas and with Ghost Whisperer…and now Medium. They put an awful lot of crap(e) on instead. Just how much do any of the “BIG SHOTS” really care???? DISGUSTED!!!!
I am so disappointed that this show is gone. I will greatly miss it.
I was not happy at all with the final episode. There was no need to kill Joe to end the show, just like there was no need to kill Jim in Ghost Whisperer. Must have been the same writers. I’ve been watching Medium since the very first episode and I am going to miss the show.
I cant stop crying! that was the saddest thing I have ever watched but in the end I think they did a really good job. rip Joe 🙁
I really liked this show and it really needs to come back. When I realized this show was cancelled it was like I lost a part of my family because I’ve watched this show from the beginning.
My husband and I watched Medium faithfully each week. I really loved the show, the family being together and Bridgette was fun. When it ended, I could hardly speak, didn’t know that it was canceled. What happened? I also didn’t like the ending, would have preferred something on a happier note. I did like the actors saying goodbye, that was special. We will really miss this show. I hope there will be reruns, at least.
