Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Wow! I didn’t think there would be so many fans that feel the way I do. I guess we were all surprised that a network could just kill a show like that, especially a network that is having trouble with their ratings. Money, money from advertisers is the prime reason, money to the stock holders, money to the executives of CBS.
Let CBS know how you guy’s feel by sending letters, e-mails, etc. Maybe peoples opinions will make the money people take a second look, maybe you will make a difference?
I did not know this episode was the series finale!! I am just as shocked. I’ve watched every episode from day one. I am sad!! I saved the last episode so I can watch it again knowing it was the very last episode. For those who don’t know, Alison Dubois is a real and well known Medium. UofA has done extensive research on Alison’s abilities and she is very accurate in what she sees and senses (they don’t usually appear in dream form as they do on TV). You can check her website at http://www.allisondubois.com. She is quite remarkable! I… Read more »
Although I am sad I will not see the ‘twins’ in their new pajamas each night, I am excited to see the lovely Patricia Arquette in her new career adventures soon. She is very talented.
I had heard on TV that this was the series finale. I loved it. I have been a follower over the years and frankly I thought it was good to see a show that had an ending instead of “life going on”. Ex. Seinfield, Cheers or just ending the series with no finale at all. I thought the idea of finding how the family was so many years later was great and the dying part left me heartbroken, but that is how, I think this show should have ended. I will miss it.
A few weeks back when Joe’s mother passed away and she came back to tell Allison that there were storms on the horizon, that foretold of something bad in the families lives. Now I thought at the time it would carry the show until the normal end of the season. What exactly does CBS know about the viewship that they felt canceling the show in January was prudent? What exactly do they have to fill the void left by this great show? The wife and I have about 10 shows per week we regularly record on our DVR and Medium… Read more »
I have loved this show since the beginning and was sorry to see it end. I didn’t like the finale because I felt there was no emotional connection to the characters we have come to love. Bridget, Marie and Scanlon got little or no air time and even Joe was disconnected from the rest of the cast. The interplay between Joe and Allison always added interest for me. Also an older Marie was impossible to connect to. The final show left me wanting, it was as if the writers were trying too hard to wrap everything up into a neat… Read more »
this last episode wasnt good but most are not(Lost and Seinfield).I knew it was the last episode because CBS kept saying series finale. We all know it was a better show on NBC than on CBS-thats just a fact.i hated that they didnt incorporate their oldest daughter in the last episode. This wont be a talked about or memorable finale whatsoever.
I cryed the whole show, it was an amazing last show . I did not know this was the last one until the show was over and I looked it up. I LOVED this show and have watched it every year, will miss it terribly. I never understand why when I love a show so much they havew to cancel it. Will miss the whole family.
I completely 100% agree with Sandi… the series finale was TERRIBLE! It was so disappointing and a true letdown to its loyal viewers. I deleted it from my DVR the minute it was over. Thank goodness I have the prior seasons on DVD so I can as least enjoy it when it was great.
Oh, and BTW, the “real” Allison and Joe and kids are alive and well. And I agree with other people that there was no warning the series was ending.
I hated the end so much I am going to dump the “seasons DVDs” in the garbage that I do own, not buy any more, I will never watch a rerun, ever. This is simply just uncalled for. And forget any “made for movie” follow ups. Now I gotta go find who the writers and producers were so I can track down everything else they produce and write for and delete any series they do from my watching list.
I just have to interject here. I suppose the reviews of all the shocked viewers is understandable, as a follower of the show I was shocked too. But I have to say that in the TV world of pap, commercialism and utter social fantasy, it was nice to see some hard edge writing; some risk taking for a change. I find this particularly refreshing in a show that deals with something that does not and cannot happen in real life. (The lingering irony here is that the show’s premise is based on real people!) I, for one, respect the decision… Read more »
CBS I cam not believe you did this to us and it was the worse ending I have ever seen !!! I have watched this show from the very beginnig looked foward to it every week!!!
Seriously??? This last show came without much warning. The ending was a hodge podge and did not do justice to this unique show and it’s actors. Booooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just watched the finale not knowing it was the last episode or that the show was even being cancelled. I felt the storyline was too complex with the drug cartel and that using an older version of maree made it hard to feel a connection for her. I wasnt dissapointed with the finale more shocked. I am sad Medium is over, however I noticed the last several episodes were grasping for a plot.
