Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I will really miss the show. I thought the finale was good, but I’m sad that it was the last episode. I thought it was nice that each actor got to say goodbye at the end.
I am so angry, this was one of my favorite shows and to end it with Joe’s death was just plain mean. To the writer how came up with this ending and to the supervisor who approved it: YOU SUCK!!!!!!
My wife loves this show. We both thought the last episode (as well as the last few before it) were terrible. Did they replace the writers? The sappy end to the final episode where Joe and Allison, reunited, walk off into the sunset together…gimme a break. All the integrity and mystery gone. Would have been nice to have the show end with the same level of creative artistry that it had exhibited in all the seasons past instead of the Hollywoodish, tie up loose ends, “I’ll wait for you on the other side” bs. Series finales are, granted, tough, but… Read more »
I loved this show and didnt even know they took it away I loved the ending but come on cbs it was your best show!
I’ve been a faithful fan of the show since the beginning. I think the marriage/relationship of Joe and Allison is completely realistic and heartwarming. Jake and Patricia have a great banter and I love all the characters. I unfortunately hated the series finale. I missed seeing a real story line involving the characters that have made the show what it is for so long. I hated killing off Joe and missing life with his family. The whole drug thing was way too convoluted for me and didn’t work at all. I often think that shows that jump ahead with timelines… Read more »
I still cannot believe that medium is over. The last episode had me crying like a baby as I was sobbing in tears. It was such a great show to watch every week with amazing acting by great actors. I felt as if though they were friends to me as I watched and reacted to every brilliant episode. I think it was a good ending for a last episode, but hate the fact that Joe was killed off at the last minute! I really, truly hope that they bring back medium, due to the supportive responses from fans everywhere. Maybe… Read more »
I’m still upset over the finale. First off, I didn’t even know the show was ending. Secondly, i know it’s *just* a tv show, but after 7 years, i truly care about the characters, and knowing that Allison has to go on for the next forty somewhat years without Joe is heartbreaking, specially for the girls. still sad.
Bring it back please, let the kids take off from there with the parents showing up as ghosts
to help them, it has to come back!!
I am so sad it ended. It has been my favorite show and I cannot understand why they cancel such a success. It was already bad to cancel Ghost whisperer.
I am sick that this beautiful show has ended. What is going to be left on television worth watching anymore? Maybe garbage like, “Skin”, which can point the way to our future. Medium was a wonderful show with good believable family vaules and experiences. I feel totally bereft.
Wish Joe didn’t die in the finale – he was one of the best characters on the show. It should have ended with none of the characters dying off and I feel it should have been left up to our imaginations that they continued on with their lives after show ended, leaving room for a tv movie special possibly in the future.
Maybe it was all a dream and the show will be back, I hope this happens as I really loved the show, will CBS try it again? they could write it off as a bad dream. I will have a tear in my eye till it returns, dreams do come true sometimes.
Wow, just an amazingly awful series finale. First you have a plot that makes little if any sense. Then a senseless tragedy that a 3rd rate psychic, let alone four in the same family should have seen and averted. Kind of destroys the feel of the entire show. What point were the producers and writers trying to make by killing off their most lovable, real and normal character. It seemed to me to be a big “in you face” moment. To show they are in control and the hell to the viewers feelings and desires. What is wrong with a… Read more »
You have that absolutely correct. I hadn’t thought that far ahead..but yes, I see they have indeed pushed to show to syndication extinction with this ending. You are right – who wants to watch a show in syndication knowing this is how it ended? Look at all the money the members of the Seinfeld cast earn from their long lasting series. The actors of Medium would earn so much money from 6 years worth of episodes in syndication – but, with this ending they’ve shot themselves in their collective feet. This extremely gifted, glorious ensemble of actors deserved to benefit… Read more »
I liked the finale but kept hoping it really wasn’t the “finale”. I’ve loved the show since the beginning….BRING IT BACK!!!…please
Loved the ending and boy did people get angry! I have seen every ep since day one and have to say the finale was just and I did not feel cheated. The finale was about Joe and Allison’s love, and how Allison was not ready to let go of Joe. He did not let go either….he waited for her to be together later in life, and I am sure he was always there with her after his death too. The finale was very emotional, and Arquette did a wonderful job, as did the rest of the cast. People seem to… Read more »
I fully agree. I hope it will come back with the final eposide as a dream. It was well done and well played by all the actors. It was a great ending, if it has to end…so much meaning and emotion…I still didn’t realize it was the last show until the very end and then I still hope that they will come back. Please change your minds and bring it back!
I agree. I hated to see the show end, but thought they did an amazing job. I think those who hated it or didn’t understand how none of them saw this coming, haven’t watched enough to know that they rarely see things happening to those closest to them.
Hats off to all the actors. The show will be missed.
