Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

All series finales should end with the cast saying “Good bye” and “Thank You”. Great idea from the producers! I LOVED the “BIG KISS” at the end as Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber made a believeable husband and wife team. Really sorry to see it end and do hope for reruns in the future and dvd’s. As a faithful viewer of the show; I too wish to tell the cast “Thank YOu”.
I was so disappointed to learn Friday’s episode was the series finale! I’ve been watching this show forever and it is one of the only tv shows I do watch and look forward to it every week. I feel like I’ve lost some friends and /or family. The cast and writers of Medium are brilliant, I just don’t understand why this show got cancelled! I am truly bummed about it. I keep hoping that I am the one having a bad dream and that it will be on next Friday 🙁 bad decision CBS. Boo on you.
I am sorry to see it go. I really enjoyed the characters. Killing off mom & dad will make it very difficult to bring it back.
I was a fan of the show, and I thought it was a very appropriate ending for the series. It was a very well defined ending, with a satisfactory result for each of the characters. What more could you ask for?
I absolutely agree with Tommy_G: This was the worst series finale I have ever seen. Why the h*** did they kill off Joe, and what is wrong with happy endings? And yes, this does spoil watching reruns – I’m done with Medium. A pity, really.
NBC and CBS blew it, TBS gave Conan another chance, why not Medium. I would like to see the cast appear on Conans show or one of the other late night talk shows to get some insight in the future plans of the actors and their comments of the shows cancellation.
This was incredible. I have loved this show from the very beginning, and this was one classy finale, curtain calls and all! BRAVO!
The worst ever ending for a wonderful show. Medium was my favorite show. I will miss it. This episode was like the writers just did a quick “hurry up and write up something so we can go find another job quick”. I cried and cried. I love a happy ending. I would not have liked any ending as I hate to see my favorite show end. But they should have showed the show with the love Allison and Joe have for each other without killing Joe. Yes, they can bring the show back, it could get picked up by a… Read more »
I loved this show I think it had togo off air because the real Allison appeared on Housewives of Beverly hills and ruined her whole persona. After seeing the real Allison I really enjoyed the t.v one much more! It was hard for anyone to believe she was the good character they showed on television!
It was so good! I didn’t even know that the series was canceled! It seriously made me cry. They couldn’t have ended this show in a better way. It was perfect. I’ll miss the characters, the awesome plots, and the 7 years of fun that I looked forward to every week.
I’ve been watching Medium since the very first episode, I am very pleased the way it ended, except they should have included the girls a little more they didn’t even show bridgett, I think this show deserved a 2-hour finale, but I’m glad it went out with dignity, and didn’t crash and burn like alot of other shows.
The finale was well done…and left me in tearful shock! I had not heard of the cancellation of a show that I really enjoyed.
I feel like Allison…caught in some nightmare, and hope I can stop it by waking up.
This may be the time to end a good thing, but I hope strong SPIRITS will
knock some creative sense into the powers that be!
I loved viewing the adventures of the Dubois family all these seasons.
You produced excellent themes, plots, and acting. Thank you. I will miss you.

The end of Medium was like a death in the family. It was very emotional for me. I will miss the Dubois family. The finale was great and did the show justice as far as I am concerned. Friday nights just will never be the same though. Best of luck to all the actors and hope they will soon be on tv again. Allison, Joe and family…you will be missed!
I have watched the show from the beginning and loved it. The finale was awful. It was confusing and hard to figure out. I didn’t know whether she was dreaming or whether it was real. I also did not know it was the finale until the parade of people at the end. very disappointing.
The finale was heartbreaking! My family and I are very disappointed the series was canceled. Now there is nothing to watch on Friday nights.
