Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I liked the episode in parts… The scene where Allison cries out for Joe to stay with her, nade ne cry like a little baby, as Arquette did a marvelous job, and certainly proved herself as the great actress she is. I’m not sure they could have ended the show on a happy note, but Joe dying was a bit much. That being said, I’m certain that the real Allison Dubois made a great job in killing the show, by displaying such an obnoxious attitude and psychotic tirades at Camille Grammer’s dinner party(on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills). I… Read more »
Perhaps it was the actions of the real Allison Dubois that so suddenly took the show down. In a clip on hulu.com, Patricia ventured onto the subject of the real Allison Dubois – and said something about how forceful and powerful she was when she made her psychic predictions..yet Patricia kind of hedged a second after saying this, then went on to say she herself chose to play Allison differently, more softly, not so overly confident – I’m paraphrasing here..but go to hulu.com to watch the clip where she and Jake are together being interviewed, and wait until the subject… Read more »
That series finale WAS STUPID. How idiotic to kill Joe! And to lead us into that winding road of awful emotions, leaving loyal viewers WITH NOTHING but a dead husband and rotting old lady. SOOOO dumb. And it didn’t even have the children in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AARGH. Whoever the writers were for this show ought to be FIRED cause they sure as hell didn’t respect us or the show!!
I have seen EVERY season and am and was a devoted viewer, however, I hated the ending. I won’t get into details but they could’ve spent a lot more effort on how to close the show. Since they didn’t I’m one with Marie as a teen in saying why didn’t Joe or “dad” say his goodbyes to EACH one of them. I hated they had him die in a plane crash. I know when it comes to family, the girls or Alisson could not see any predictions since they were too xlose to them but come on . I at… Read more »
It was a great show, I just couldn’t believe it was the last one. We have watched it from the very beginning and it most definitely has more to go. I am sad to see such a brilliant show come to an end. The whole cast has been fantastic. Please, please bring more, maybe some movies for tv!!
I loved it! I too hoped it wasn’t the finale but Joe and Allison had such great chemistry that always brought me back. i cried and I will miss the show but the ending kinda wrapped everything up and gave it finality.
This was an awful ending to a wonderful series. I agree that there would have been some kind of foreshadowing with at least one of the psychics in the house, even if they were not able to avert the crash. I am hoping that SyFy will pick it up and make this ending just a dream that Alison had, or better yet, ignore it altogether. I was so sad to see it end this way! I felt like this was a soap opera ending – killing off the characters.
It seems to me that the producers did not want this show to do well. Why would you make it so difficult for viewers to find and keep up with. You moved the show from station to station. Channel 3 to Lifetime to another channel. the time schedule went from 7:30 to 11:oo to 9:00, the day went from Friday to Tuesday to whatever. I never could find it or I would forget the day. I will buy the series but whoever sets these shows will pick the worse shows and cancel the good ones. Your judgement is all bad.… Read more »
As a devoted veiwer from the very first episode, while I was sad to see it go, I felt it touch on all the right emotional points. Thank you very much for the ride. 🙂
Bad ending to a great show. We will miss it here 🙁
What a horrible ending to one of my favorite shows..Thank God the real Joe is alive and well. I hated this series fianle just as much as I hated the Lost finale..Yuck..
Good luck cast hope you live long and prosper..:) thank you for a wonderful show for 7 years minus one episode. I will rewrite the ending for myself.
I tuned in on Friday for my usual fix of Medium, and when I read the caption it says “series finale”. I was very confused because isn’t this the time when shows are STARTING, not ending?? Needless to say, I am very disapointed it ended…I have watched it for so long and it wasn’t another one of those pointless reality shows. It actually had depth and real characters. I thought the ending was cheesy, although I will watch it. It does suck to know this type of ending, especially for when we watch the re-runs! On a final note, if… Read more »
What an awful depressing ending. I think the finale was terrible. I usually record the shows and watch them again. I will definitely NOT watch this one. I think it ruined all the years this show was on. What a horrible way to go.
Well, I didn’t know it was the end until I watched it.
It made my cry to know Joe died. But it was great to see how all the girls turned out. I am sorry it ended, it was a really great show.
i cant believe you CANCELLED this show i love this show, you are getting as bad as abc about canceling good shows, if you take off crimial minds i wont watch nbc either just like abc , stick to cable shows maybe they will pick it up.
I never never never like an amnesia plotline. So cliche. That said, I didn’t mind the ending too much. I do wish instead of dragging out the first 45 minutes with the “dream”, that they had just let Joe die at the beginning, and then show him helping Allison with her cases over the years. Joe was always her sounding board – now he could actually help her by seeing and doing things a human couldn’t, such as spy on suspects who can’t see him. This is what Ghost Whisperer should have done when they killed off Jim. Let the… Read more »
