Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I had no idea that the series was at an end. It was one of my favorite shows. Oh well.
I would have loved it even more if Allison and Joe went to visit the girls to say one more goodbye, since they also had the gift! Otherwise, sad to see the series also die. I already have the first six seasons on DVD and can’t wait to get the final season.
I was a long time fan of the show from day one. When I thought it would be cancelled a couple or so years ago, CBS picked it up where NBC had dropped it. I was glad! I thought all the story lines were so well written. I did NOT know that Friday nights show was the very last one!! That just shocked me. I cried! I had mixed feelings about the show. I really did hate that it was the last one and that there was no word about it being the last one, and of course knowing that… Read more »
Medium has been one of my favorite shows since it began. While the plotlines were always interesting, my favorite aspect of the show was the relationship Allison and Joe had with each other, and the love they shared with their children. The show was realistic, interesting, and exciting, but most importantly it had a heart. To think of Allison living the second half of her life without Joe is almost too much to bear given that their marriage was the foundation of this beautiful show. There is so much heartache and sadness in the world, I wish this show could… Read more »
I can’t believe and I am very disappointed that the series is over. I loved that show. I did enjoy the series finale, but it made me very sad. When Allison asked Joe at the end, do I get a kiss, and he says to her from now until the end of time. I cried my eyes out. I will miss “Medium” very much. Its seems that all the shows that I love are going to be taken off the air. I am not a happy camper.
I have never seen a bad episode of “Medium” until I watched the finale. That was the WORST series finale I have ever seen. Killing off a major beloved character was completely and totally heartless and a big middle finger to the fans of the show. Also CBS can suck a big one for not giving this series the fanfare that is will be the finale episode. As far as my girlfriend and I are concerned, this episode NEVER happened. Allison and Joe and the kids lived a long happy life together…THE END.
Very sorry the series ended, just started watching it last year, and now it is over. The last episode was very very sad, with Joe dying…
I also agree that I did not know it was the last show. I thought the episode was well thought out and also found myself sobbing at the end. I felt that I lost part of my family, watching her family grow over the seasons, I didnt know that it would have that affect on me. I looked forward to Friday nights. I dont know if they can top the popularity of this series. Will miss.
I have watched The Medium since the first episode, and I have loved it. It quickly became one of my favorites, but I was surprised that the series was ending. I watched the last episode, and was so disappointed—-first, that the series was over, and secondly that it ended the way it did. There’s so much sadness around us all of the time, so I was hoping for a happy ending. That is one reason I watch the programs I do—for the calming affect they have on me. The Medium was always a program that not only had wonderful plots,… Read more »
I had NO IDEA it was going to be the finale until everyone said goodbye at the end!!! I am feeling awful, having watched the show siince the first episode. I had no idea they were cancelled, not at all. My mind is blown!
It was a wonderful series, and yes you did a great job for the last show but I have to say that I am still waiting to wake up from my bad dream and find that the show is still on the air. Loved the show and will miss it very much. Please bring it back.
Since I had not heard the show was ending, I kept thinking it was all still going to be a dream until the end when Allison is a great-grandmother! I was surprised after seeing the silent good-byes from the cast how sad I felt – like I had lost some dear friends. I will miss them!
Very satisfying ending – watched it twice already. Thank you for a great show CBS
I am sitting here crying over Medium’s last show. My family and I watched it every week all together. (There are so few shows we can do that with) My daughter’s were crying as we watch Allison break down over Joe’s death. We all sat there sobbing away and couldn’t believe this was the end. We have watched every show and wish it wasn’t ending. We weren’t crazy with the way the story line went, however, the ending was fantastic. We will miss the Dubois’ every week and I wish the actors well. I have never cried over a series… Read more »
I had no idea this was the season finale when I watched it and I kept waiting for it to make sense, for things to get better, but they didn’t. It was such a painful shock when they killed Joe, I just hated this finale and I especially hated how I learned it was the finale. I didn’t have a chance to prepare myself and so it was so much worse than it could have been. I loved Medium, and watched every episode. What a terrible way to end the series. This seemed like it was thought up at the… Read more »
Exactly…I was so shocked, like other viewers I thought it was a really awful ending. Also, I believe Joe would have appeared to Alison just as his father and most recently his mother have appeared to her and if she found it hard to believe Joe was dead, they would have found a way to convince her of something so important…Not a good ending to carry forward in my memory of this exceptional show at all. I have never looked forward to a show so much and made sure I watched it whenever I could. I don’t watch much TV… Read more »
I agree with all the above comments; not what I expected & real surprise! I hope CBS will bring it back & make it even better… with the whole cast! Joe is a great character. One of the few good good shows which is not all about “people just being stupid & doing stupid things”
