Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

_HATED_ the Finale, except for the wave goodbye from the cast. I know this will not be picked back up, although I will want it so bad to be picked-up. The wave ‘goodbye’ from the cast sealed the deal. NOTE TO Studio Execs.: Stop replacing good shows like this with ‘reality’ TV shows. Anything reality is crap. You want us to stay for commercials? You want us to tune in? Get yourselves new families to represent American viewers. Make a new system that gets the real numbers from everybody, not just a chosen few. Your data is _SERIOUSLY_ flawed if… Read more »
I am with all of you. When it said the SERIES FINALE I was like WHAT??!! Why is it that a great show always goes by the way side. It’s like losing a family member. You get so wrapped up in the show and poof it’s gone. I liked the ending with all the actors basically saying good bye to us. CBS you should have done more to support a wonderful show.
OMG!!!!! I just finished watching Medium from my DVR I was so devastated to find out that this was The End What happened???? Why!!!!??? Do you know how many People watched Medium? I’m So disturbed with CBS I could understand if the ratings were down but they Were not ….. This was an awesome show and ti end it the way you did Is so pathetic … Really? Really? After such amazing seasons, why they would decide to cancel is beyond me. But to end the show the way they did was like they rushed to come up with an ending and they just threw it all together. It was disappointing, angering, frustrating and whatever.adjective that works. I have been disappointed by shows being cancelled but this was so unexpected and the finale just downright sucked!!!
I loved it. I’m very sad the show has come to an end. It’s one of my favorites. I love Patricia as Allison.
Why did you have to cancel a great show such as Medium??? With all that reality crap out there, I really enjoyed this show. Last season, you chose between Medium and Ghost Whisperer. You decided to cancel Ghost Whisperer and to keep Medium on the air. Now you just cancelled one of the greatest and unique shows on the air. The characters are just a regular Middle-class family, with regular problems. Only difference was that Medium had just the right touch of the supernatural to add intrigue. What is worst is that nowhere was it advertised that this was the… Read more »
My wife and I fell right into the ending of this finale, not kowing this was the end of the whole show. Loved all 7 seasons and would love to see another show with healthy family issues that get resolved while a back-drop to an overall plot. This show was awesome and we are sorry to see it go. The ending was sad. Cudos to the child actors- so fun to watch them mature over the years. Cudos to the parent actors and the writers/director for creating quality television for 7 years….It will be sorely missed.
The finale felt weak and hastily put together. It reminded me of the last episode of Six Feet Under, without the emotion. It’s really disconcerting when TV and movie developers take such license with the lives of actual people. I always feel ripped off when I know the people or person actally existed and the producer obviously changed the story to please the audience rather than honor the living. Not art.
Medium was my favorite show…..a real family. What is wrong with CBS for cancelling it? Now there is nothing on CBS worth watching.
I was very surprised when I watched the finale. I had no idea it was ending until it ended. I was shocked and almost cried. I really liked this family and loved to watch the episode. I agree this show had heart and always left me feeling good when the show was over. The heartbeat of the show is something missing from other lousy cop shows or silly mindless laugh here and there.
I am still so disappointed.
I am shocked and sadden that the show has ended. I looked forward to relaxing while watching the show and getting surprised ever now and then. No other show can top “Medium” and no other show will!
The only possible way to get the show back is to overwhelm CBS with a massive amount of letters, e-mails and phone calls. Viewers equate to money, it’s the only thing that motivates networks.
I have not found a T V series which I have loved like Meduim in a long long time! I hated the ending…………I hated that this was the end of the series… and no notice! What is going on? Yes the girls were growing up, but so it goes, I’m sorry I was a devoted fan every week, even during reruns! I agree with the other disappointed vierers! Tho I hope to see Ariel, Bridget and Marie in other offerings, they are great!
I loved it, It was a fitting sign off for one of my favorite showS.
IT WAS THE PERFECT END TO AN ONGOING SAGA,
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO KEPT ME ENTERTAINED OVER BOTH NETWORKS
I was very saddened by the way they ended the series I don’t think Joe had to die and nothing in the previous episodes of this season really lead to this point, there was no build up for this kind of family tragedy to happen. I get that Joes Mom kind of warned her there was going to be “darkness” in the future, but really the death if Joe I just find it unsettling. I love medium and I still can’t get this episode off my mind. I feel like it should have ended with Joe and allison growing old… Read more »
