Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Loved the show! Loved the ending! Sure gave me a pinch to appreciate my husband more as you never know what life has in store.
PS I didn’t think it was still on because I couldn’t find it on TV, and like all the stations who cancel shows….we are the last to know……………Like I said before, I loved the ending from what I see here…..I hope to see at least the ending again….I wish it wasn’t taken off……………….why don’t they let it run on with them in the after-life watching and giving their children and grandchildren advise from up there? AS spirits….and only the girls could see them…………then we can have them back….as another show…too many shows are being taken off that are still good….and… Read more »
I can’t believe that was the end of the greatest series. I was devestated to find out that it was the series finale. I actually cried, and wished it would have been at least 2 hours. I hope it gets picked up again from another network and Alison was just dreaming. My daughter just started watching it last season and was also dissapointed that it ended.
I didn’t know it was still on and I am so sorry I missed the last episode…..I will love it! It is the best way to go out……………………I hope it will show that last episode again…………I hope I will see it…………..I want to kick myself for not putting on that TV and seeing if it is still on…………
I can’t believe this was the end. I loved this show it was by far my favorite. Good luck to all the cast members. I am heartbroken.
I also didn’t know the show was going to end. I and my son and his wife loved this show. We don’t want it to end either. Usually we get some notice or a lot of publicity when a show is about to end. No warning here. I will rewatch the ending on the internet as I missed some of the ending. If I had been warned about it’s ending I would have payed more attention to the last episode. I would still like the show to go on. It could be possible that one of her kids or grandkids… Read more »
All I have to say is WOW!!!!What a wonderful ending to a spectacular show. You will be missed forever from all your fans. That last scene, I just can’t say enough about it, I cried my eyes out. It was absolutly beautiful. Another great show bites the dust. That is just unfair. I guess the networks want to make more room for these stupid reality shows. What happened to entertainment isn’t that what television is supposed to be about. REALITY TV ruined everything. I am tired of loving a show only to have it ripped away from me. How many… Read more »
I was not aware the series was ending. I was shocked and very disappointed. I’m glad the ending showed Joe and Allison kissing. But I will miss the show very much. Who decided that it was over????
I thought it was an excellent farewell episode. Sure, there are always things that can be done differently, but you have to pick one and run with it. I’m sorry that some readers were not aware this was the final episode, that would indeed be a very unwelcome surprise! But anyone reading this site should have had plenty of advance warning the end was near for Medium. Seven years and 130 shows is a good run for any show. Especially after it’s premiere when a critic said it wouldn’t take a psychic to see that the show wouldn’t last more… Read more »
I loved this show and hated to see it end. I think it could have ended better than what it did without joe dying
I had no idea the series was ending and I’m crying and heartbroken. I absolutely loved this show and it is insane that it didn’t get picked up and continued. We all KNOW what crap there is on network television. WHY the good shows…. WHY? Really? Only crime shows and situation comedies and sports. That’s the diet? Ridiculous!
I knew it was the Series Finale, because they advertised it at the end of the previous episode. But I was so shocked about Joe’s death. I hated the way the show ended!! The only good things were the fact that at least we got a series finale and not a cliffhanger and also the goodbyes by the actors at the end. For me, the show really ended with the previous episode and this one never existed!
When they said the series was ending, I hoped they would tie up the loose ends & they did.
The ending was a bit like “The Ghost & Mrs. Muir” movie…very sweet. I will miss this show.
I can’t believe it’s over!!! Why?? I LOVE this show and I had no idea this was going to be the last show! I didn’t really think this was good for it being the last one, I was dissapointed. My husband and I watch this every Friday together and if were not home we record it. Im so upset it won’t be on anymore!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great ending. It made me cry and yet I loved the way it ended. Joe waiting for her and the pictures of the kids. The best part – all the actors saying goodbye.
