Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I had no idea it was the finale! I love Medium! I kept thinking that in the end it would be just another bad dream! I thought it was done so well. This is a show I will truly miss. Wonderful cast – and I loved the ending where the cast is shown as themselves.
I thought the last five minutes this episode was a ripoff from the series finale of six feet under.
It was announced quite some time ago that it was ending in January. I hate to see it end, but at least it went out as a class act. Let’s face, one of them had to die first and it was nice to see them reunited for eternity. Way to go Medium. You did a great job and we’ll miss you.
I have been a fan of this show since the first season. I loved the way the story lines were intertwined with a strong family involvement. I loved the connection Alison and Joe had with each other too as well as Alison’s co-workers. There was no warning that the end was coming!!!!!! I watched it over different time slots and stations. I was not impressed with the last episode like many of the comments before me. I’ll REALLY miss this show – it’s been my favorite and probably won’t be watching Friday night TV for a long time. I’m sick… Read more »
I don’t understand – this was cancelled? By the network? How could any network executive be so stupid?
Ya gotta wonder what the hiring criteria is a these networks. So many wonderful programs destroyed by incompetant morons.
I too didn’t know it was the last episode and was shocked to see it end. However, I do think the writers came up with a story that ends the way I (and I’m sure they) feel about the cancellation – cancelled (killed off) before it’s time. I was haunted with dreams of the characters last night – I didn’t realize how much that family had become an important part of my week. The cast, writers and directors were excellent. All the best to Patricia and Jake as they did an excellent job of anchoring each story. I hope to… Read more »
I loved the show, it was something a family could enjoy togeather. I have been a fan from day one I am so sorry its gone.
why do they cancel one of the best on TV?
I did not now I was watching the last episode!!!! Is very sad that one of the best shows in tv right now, if not the best, has been cancelled and we are left with more and trash. So sad!!!!!
Other than being dissapointed that this series was anceled, TV Execs continue to be dumb as dirt…this episode was one of the best finalies ever…I was sitting with my wife and i hugged her and started to weep…out of nowhere.
I too loved the show, and hated to see it end…Especially the way it did. I hate that they killed Joe off, and expected me to be content with a reunion at the end. What about the 40 years in between? Allison has to spend them alone- since she obviously never remarried. Their kids have to grow up without a father. I think the finale was unworthy of the wonderful writing that made up the series. It seemed like they wanted to leave us with a big emotional bang, but decided to do something that the show never did before… Read more »
Bravo! My thoughts exactly.
This series absolutely my happy place! Seriously upset it was the last episode. I hope they change their minds and revive it! I couldn’t sleep all night after I watched the episode. I work and am getting my masters…so it’s not like I have nothing better to do. I just chose to spend my free time hanging out with Patricia and Jake…Very sad…
Had no idea that this was the last show until the very end. I liked the episode and think it was a good ending to the series but am disappointed that it is the last episode. 🙁
I was horribly disappointed that the series was cancelled! I didn’t know that this was coming. I hated the last episode. I found it depressing. Yeah, Joe was waiting for Allison, woop-dee-doo. I would rather think that they lived a happy long life together – then died happily ever after. This episode did not seem like the usual style. I am really going to miss the show.
I agree whole heartedly! If the writers decided ti kill off the father of three other kids in a different episode they never would have disregarded their grief the way they did with Joe and Allison’s kids. Sure he was waiting for Allison at the end, but what about the 40 years in between?
Totally agree, didn’t know it was the final episode until I checked the tv listing when it was over. I feel very bad about it. I much rather would have had a happy ending. I loved the show and characters and will really miss them.
I agree 100%.
I agree 100%.I didn’t know it was the last one either but I still didn’t think they did the show justice.Just like Ghost Whisperer..all the good shows are being cancelled & we just won’t watch tv & sponsors will wonder what happened to everyone.
When did they decide to end…Im overseas and HAD absolutely NO idea about this, No im not in a cave, just Germany…Im so….Why…it was the most impressive sitcom EVER! I loved the ending however my heart is forever broken!
This was the classiest and most creative finale’ ending that I’ve ever seen on television!! It was perfection to the last detail and deserved a standing ovation & I have never ever said that about any T.V. show finale. Oh how I wished that I could have been there in person to hug & thank all of you for your origionality & sensitivity to all of us loyal fans. You didn’t give us the expected standard cookie cutter ending episode but instead you pushed yourselves to the max and delivered a finale masterpiece that is sure to be copied for… Read more »
No, you are not the only one that didn’t realize. I had DVR’d Medium last Friday and just watched it today. I hadn’t read the description closely…..after all how many times have we seen the phrase “season finale” and although I couldn’t figure out how there was a season finale and thought my DVR had not been taping segments and I needed to try and find the episodes online. I CANNOT BELIEVE that Medium was canceled! This is the only show that I have threatened my husband about if he erased it before I had seen it. Up to the… Read more »
I agree with Ms. Cobbs totally. This was a wonderful ending to a wonderful show. It closed the circle completely which to me revolved around two people who were commited to each other and to their family. It was real with driving kids to school, and so on. I loved the acting, the writing and the ending. I even liked the waves from the cast at the end. The final show saw me with tears streaming down my face but so happy that Joe and Allison were together forever.
