Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

No!!! I am so sad but, if it had to end it was a really good show. I will miss it so much,
This was so unexpected. I can not believe I will not get to watch the Medium any more. I have enjoyed watching the family and connected with some of the troubles they went through with money and the decision to go back to college in mid life. I really thought the writers were wonderful and all the acters were absolutly incredable and the stories were fantastic. Why do they have to end a fantastic show that so many people still watch? There could have been so many more stories to tell especially with the girls getting older and Alison studying… Read more »
I loved this show. It was as good as Hitchcock and at times, even more clever. This was indeed a cruel and disturbing ending that left a bad taste in my mouth and even a sleepless night. Not how I wanted to remember one of my favorite shows.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE MEDIUM ! I AM SO SAD TO SEE IT END I DONT KNOW WHAT IM GOING TO WATCH I KNOW IT CANT STAY ON FOREVER BUT 3 MORE YEARS WOULD NOT HAVE HURT . I LIKED THE ENDING I WAS CRYING MY EYES OUT NOT ONLY FOR JOE BUT BECAUSE IM NOT GOING TO HAVE MY FRIDAY NIGHTS AT 8 TO LOOK FOR;(
Just watched the last episode online. Maybe I’m one of a handful of male viewers, but man, I am going to miss this show.
i did not like the ending it seemed to rushed cbs sucks over 7 million people watch this show every week they should have had more time to finish the show the right way cbs sucks
Aaahhhhh—thank you for everyone that posted their comments!! I am the only person that I know that watches “Medium” and had nobody to discuss it with this weekend. I was balling my eyes out when i was watching it. And I was confused – if it really was the end of the show, so I just looked on-line to find out so. Joe dying was just wrong, distastful. I think that Allison & Joe were one of the best role model marriages on TV today so maybe thats why it was so heartbreaking for us viewers. And -hello- the show… Read more »
I was totally shocked and disappointed hearing one of our favouite series has cancelled. My husband and I’ve been watching since first season.
I will miss Medium. It was my favortie show ever. It always had cleaver endings that tied earlier parts of the show together. I will miss each of the family members as they felt like part of my family. I feel like I am grieving……………goodbye the show was wonderful
Medium was my all time favorite show. I loved how each episode would piece together the parts with an incredible ending. I loved each character and had a special connection to all of them. Medium will be missed almost as much as a death of a family member. I will really miss you……………..
I too was shell-shocked having no previous knowledge of this being the series finale. To make matters worse, I have daughters (2 not 3) and I am married to an engineer. I’m not a psychic or anything, but I related to Allison as a mother and the wife of an engineer and I REALLY related the Joe character to my husband. They are a lot alike, and the way their marriage is, is a lot like ours, loving, intelligent partners who have conflict but resolve it in a healthy way, etc. I found it so wonderful to see a marriage… Read more »
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Bad enough you canceled my favorite show! You had to kill off a member of the family! SHAME ON YOU! I was hoping maybe I’d hear of a Medium movie in the near future, but that seems unlikely now. Except for the psychic abilities, I felt the show realistically portrayed many of the challenges and pleasures many families experience in their everyday lives! LOVED THE SHOW! I’LL MISS IT!
I had no idea that the show was ending once again, I was so happy when CBS picked it up. Easily my favorite show, seeing the end was very disappointing. One thing I have always liked about the show is the strength of their relationship. It seems like it would have been possible to end the show with “finality” as well as a “happily ever after”. However if the inention of the writers was to pull the heart strings they definately did, I cried my heart out, of course it does not help that my husband had flown out of… Read more »
!!!Sick and twisted, what were they thinking??? “This is how you kill off Medium fans”!!! I was so happy CBS picked up Medium. the tweeking they did was a bit uneven, still it remained one of the finer and underrated shows on TV, my personal favorite. The bad taste I have seen lately on other CBS programs did worry me and with this ending … what a waste, what bad writing!!! Shame on whomever is responsible. Time to turn CBS off and stop buying the unfaithful sponsors’products. I wish the cast well, you will be missed!!!
The scene where Joe appears coming from the bathroom to the bedroom to tell Allison he had died..was so callous, and unexpressive I believe Jake Weber himself found the lines ridiculous. He delivered those callous words with no emotion, and so quickly it was like he had a bus to catch – although we all know with his acting skill he could have made them so memorable. Jake Weber for some reason made that that scene the standout absurdity of the entire episode, and I believe it’s because he was boxed into playing a scene that was abhorrent to him.… Read more »
Excellent analysis. You are so right about Jake Weber’s great talent and why he may have delivered those lines in this manner. But I think that his totally professional attitude superseded his personal feelings and required him to deliver his lines according to the director’s instructions. I guess the point of this direction, if that was the reasoning, was that “Joe’s” loving and caring exchange, which was truly an integral part of his character, would have made the parting even more difficult for “Alison.” Of course, the situation was difficult enough, as well as hurtfully heart wrenching, but we shouldn’t… Read more »
