Tuesday night, FOX debuted a new drama for the Summer months, Mental. So, did the premiere’s ratings make the network crazy-happy or just drive them crazy?
Mental revolves around an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Edwin Hodge.
The series premiered on Tuesday night and finished in third place for the 9pm hour with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share among the 18-49 demographic.
Those numbers aren’t that impressive but the drama did build on its lead-in, a rerun of the popular and very compatible House. There was also very little drop off between Mental’s first and second half hours, indicating that most watched the entire episode.
So, while Mental didn’t have a great debut, it wasn’t bad either. As we enter into the Summer months, viewership tends to fall off so the network may be okay with these numbers. But, will people return for subsequent installments? Will FOX give the show a second season once all 13 episodes have aired? We’ll have to wait and see.
So, what did you think? Is the show worth keeping or should it be cancelled?

This show is terrible. Someone please put it out of its misery. The production value is the least of its problems. Yuck.
My husband and I really like the show.I hope that the show doesn’t get cancel.
Please, please, please, keep the show. It has a great cast and wonderful story lines.
keep it.
Keep it!
Please keep it. I love it. I love House too and this has a similar format.
I love Mental. Chris Vance is great and I love the rest of the cast, too. It is so interesting see all the different mental illnesses.
Love this show. It’s about time some one came up w/ this premise. If Fox doesn’t keep it I hope that another network will. What a great concept.
…..the head director or whatever shows way too much cleavage. It’s not tactful and tasteless. and completely unnecessary.
PLEASE……PLEASE keep it…love the show!!
I say keep it!!!
And to the person who doesn’t want to keep it because of the “misleading’ information about mental illness, I would STRONGLY hope that no one takes any show so seriously, a TV show it for entertainment, not for learning about incredibly intricate issues like mental health. ER was on for over a decade and any doctor would argue the correct-ness of that show… and don’t even get me started on CSI’s accuracy, just let TV be enjoyable, don’t harass it for not being exactly on the ball
I am a huge fan of House, and Mental is nothing like it. It is a good show however, and I say keep it. I love the plots, because they vary from House’s.
Keep it! About time there was some hope or caring in the mental health field.
Cancel it. To all the people saying, “It’s not like House! It’s slightly different!” Well then, why don’t we do that with every scripted television show out there? Let’s have a whole evening block of the same show hour after hour, only that’s “slightly different” with each following series. By replicating someone else’s formula and making slight tweaks we’re feeding into the networks mentality of “Oh, we don’t have to try very hard. We’ll put forth very little effort creating new, invigorating series and these viewers will eat it up”, that’s the reason we have all these horrible reality shows… Read more »
After reading some of the reviews, I say cancel it before people get the wrong ideas. Too many people here are wanting to keep the show so they can “learn about mental illness”. As someone with a degree in psychology and who works in the field, I can say that from what I have seen of this show, you are better off doing research in a book store to learn something about mental illness than watching this show. There is already enough confusion out there without this crap be quoted as “fact”.
