At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

Love Mercy liked Trauma NBC is stupid how do they expect people to keep watching their shows when they dont even let them have time top build a following. I know all my friends watch Mercy. Maybe NBC should go to Facebook and read all the comments being left on the Mercy page.
I am PISSED!
Wow. I cannot believe Mercy was cancelled! I honestly do not know anyone who didn’t like the show… My heart broke with episode 20; there is so much left unanswered. I really hope another network picks up Mercy (like Southland) and at least finishes the season. Mercy is a lighter version of ER and Grey’s Anatomy, it could certainly last as long if it pulls in enough viewers!
BRING MERCY BACK!!!!
I watched Mercy faithfully from the beginning, and as a viewer it was a lot of work thanks to NBC. The show was a last minute replacement for Parenthood which had production delays. So the show was on a few weeks then missing for 2 to 3 weeks at a time due to completing episodes as they go. NBC may have committed to the production of the show with guest stars, but what does that mean if you don’t promote. I enjoyed the humor the drama and the development of all the characters on mercy flaws and all. I also… Read more »
Another good thing tossed out like trash… NBC TV dopes have now clue! Hey NBC, get a real ratings system that actually shows the real popularity of a show! Let us all have a say!
Why cancell it? This was a great show.
WHAT IS NBC’S PROBLEM? YOU CANT JUST CANCEL A SHOW AT ITS STORYLINE PEAK! THERES GOT TO BE SOMETHING WE CAN DO TO REVIVE IT. MAYBE IT SHOULD BE SHOPPED AROUND TO CABLE NETWORKS WHO WELCOME MERCY’S SUBTLE RATINGS. BUT THIS SHOW HAS LOYAL WORTHY FANS WHO STUCK THRU ALL THE WAY TO EPISODE 20 HOPING TO SEE A SECOND SEASON. I THINK ITS COMPLETELY UNFAIR AND RUDE ON NBC’S BEHALF. LETS HOPE MERCY BECOMES THE NEXT SOUTHLAND, BECAUSE ITS A HECK OF SHOW. NBC COULDVE AT LEAST ORDERED A COUPLE MORE AND CHANGE ITS TIME AND DAY. PUTTING A… Read more »
I actually went into Mercy expecting to hate it, and I definitely found the heavy handed, “I WAS IN… EYE-RACK!” nonsense irksome enough to stop watching the first episode. Then I started nursing school and we were told to watch TV and movies that portray nurses, so I went back to Mercy and a few episodes in I was hooked. That show was refreshingly fast-paced, at times tongue-in-cheek, and totally cracktacular. It became one of my favourite guilty pleasures and I’m disappointed to see it go. With three nurse-based shows turning up over 2009/2010, I thought Mercy ranked in a… Read more »
NBC, What is the point of even watching shows on your network? It takes a large time and energy commitment from the viewer to watch a show each week and really get into the characters and plot lines. It was bad enough when you used to pull shows after their first season before letting them build up a following, but now by pulling shows mid-season you are blatantly slapping the faces of the viewers. Why should we waste our time with your network if you won’t even finish up a season or wrap up shows with a finale? It’s insulting.… Read more »
I didnt watch mercy but the fans of that have my symphanthies. I watched Trauma and they canceled it. WTF!!!??? Yeah I don’t know either. Second only to Fox, NBC you SUCK AND ROCK AT THE SAME TIME SO MUCH. Renewing Parenthood., The marriage ref and minute to win it good. But the negativeativity outweighs the postive. Like My own worst enemy, My name is earl and now Trauma to name a few. How the hell did you renew ER for 15 seasons but can’t renew Trauma or Mercy even for one more season. YOU GUYS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the people… Read more »
I loved Mercy. It was an honest show. Trauma. meh. could def live without. But Mercy is heartbreaking.
b*llsh*t
This is truly a waste of great talent! The writing and concepts were fresh and well done, and you couldn’t have chosen a better group of actors to play the multi-dimensional characters! It is no wonder that the vast majority of people have a negative feeling about NBC! The decisions they keep making are completely in opposition to what the public wants! NBC should actually start listening to the few remaining viewers it has left, and give Mercy a second season! It’s low ratings, in my opinion, have more to do with the fact that it was on NBC, than… Read more »

So sad. I watch other shows with my husband but tivo shows I love. Mercy, Trauma, Three Rivers, Life, and Law and Order were all shows I was devoted to. I would love to see cable pick up one or more of these diamonds in the rough. What will I watch now? That was my me time. What about me? What about my needs. NBC you suck!
TELL ME ABOUT IT. WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
I just watched the last episode of Mercy and begged my husband to find out when the next show would air – That is when I found out that Mercy was CANCELLED!! This show is one of the best medical dramas I have ever seen. My husband and I looked forward to watching this show every week. I feel that it should of ended on a lighter note if it was known that show would be cancelled. Now we are left wondering what happened to Chris and Mike and also if Chloe was pregnant??!!?? Worst ending for a cancelled show!
