Good news and bad news for the fans of FOX’s new Mulaney sitcom. On the downside, the network has cut the first season order, from 16 to 13 installments. On the positive side, they haven’t cancelled it — yet.
Mulaney follows a rising stand-up comic John Mulaney (Mulaney) who’s trying to take his career to the next level. He’s both helped and hindered by his friends and mentors. The rest of the cast includes Martin Short, Nasim Pedrad, Seaton Smith, Zack Pearlman, and Elliott Gould.
The show has been doing very poorly in the ratings. It debuted to a lowly 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.3 million viewers. The second installment drew a 1.1 in the demo with 2.19 million. With numbers like these, Mulaney is sure to be cancelled but FOX doesn’t seem willing to thrown in the towel just yet. They also seem to have no interest in airing it past mid-season.
According to Deadline, FOX cut the show’s episode order as cast and crew were about to go into production on episode 14.
The network initially ordered six episodes in October, then ordered 10 more in May when execs decided not to order any new comedy pilots to series. FOX does have four straight-to-series half-hour shows in the works however.
What do you think? Do you like the Mulaney sitcom? Do you think it has a chance of surviving to see a second season?
This show is so utterly boring! Please get riding it. What’s really sad is that they’ve cancelled rising hope yet they thought this show would be a hit?? Raising Hope was funny this is just painfully boring!!!!
This show ruined the Sunday night lineup on FOX. Cut it. Not funny at all.
I enjoy the show myself, but didn’t expect it to get a decent run. Fox screwed with the ever popular “Animation Domination” block, and slipped 2 live action sitcoms in the middle of it? That was seriously stupid. Rather than axing the shows that could develop into decent programs given the proper night and time, maybe just fire the imbecile who thought ******** up the popular block of programs, and losing American Dad to TBS was a great idea. Sunday night lineups across the networks, broadcast as much as cable, are powerhouses for ratings. So many great shows to choose… Read more »
Cancel! Nasim Pedrad belongs on SNL & needs to go back there!
How Fox can solve the problem:
Contact Seth McFarlane and apologize AGAIN for cancelling one of his shows.
Beg and plead with TBS to let McFarlane out of his “American Dad” deal.
Put “American Dad” back on.
Have Mulaney personally apologize to Jerry Seinfeld for ripping off his show.
Hah! Exactly, it is a painfully poor imitation of Seinfield.
And also agree about American Dad.
Completely agree!
This show had such a huge promotional push, and fell flat out of the gate, or possibly on the way to the gate. It pains me to watch Elliot Gould after watching him blaze the screen on Ray Donovan. Martin Short is good, as usual, but not great, but that can be forgiven based upon the material he has been given. Hell, it’s a paycheck. Maybe John Mulaney should just be the writer and not the star. His delivery is so nasal I’m thinking about sending him a case of Afrin. And, his deadpan sucks. The funniest line in the… Read more »
“American Dad” got booted off FOX for this? I rarely watch a new show and feel pained and uncomfortable–for both myself AND the cast. “Mulaney” is one of those cases. Very few comedian-centered sitcoms work. The notable exception, of course, being “Seinfeld.” (Comedians also make bad morning radio hosts, or even guests for that matter, but that’s another topic.) If you like John Mulaney’ stand-up, great. Some like Dane Cook, too. But, this show doesn’t make John Mulaney look very funny–at all. While I respect Martin Short’s resume and work, this vehicle doesn’t move his career forward, either. Put this… Read more »
went to you tube to see this guy’s stand up. NOT FUNNY, that’s why his show has failed. jokes you could see coming from a mile away and those that weren’t obvious weren’t funny either, I was amazed that people in the audience were laughing and guffawing when he took a breath, he hadn’t said word one about the joke and people were already rolling in the aisles. while a small group might think every word out of his mouth is the funniest thing they have ever heard, most people obviously don’t. add in the poor Seinfeld rip off and… Read more »
I’ve been in television entertainment for 45 years. John Mulaney is funny, but the TV show
is just awful. The writing is sophomoric and the able cast suffers terribly on account of it.
Cancel the show, as soon as possible, and put on more reruns of Modern Family.
Interesting comments above; I LOVE Martin Short. I saw two episodes of this Seinfeld ripoff show on an airplane yesterday. If it weren’t for Short, it would have been putrid. As it was, I’d call it so-so at best. The four young characters, including the star, are all unfunny. Like any other show, it’s the writing that makes or breaks it.
One of the main problems I believe is that the comedic styles of Short and Mulaney are too different and a fan of one is unlikely to be a fan of the other. I enjoy the writing, but I enjoy his stand up writing. Not to say that type of writing translates well into a sitcom, but funny is funny. This will no doubt be cancelled.
This show is actually quite funny and Mulaney along with the supporting cast have great chemistry. I believe it is the mere presence of Martin Short that makes it unbearable at times. He is not funny and ruins the flow. The first episode was horrible, but the second which had much less of Short in it had me laughing out loud. “hey Mr. Episiotomy” LMAO!!!! The nod to Seinfeld is great and hopefully they can turn the ratings around.
Fox should cut it all……………….
and there’s gambling at Rick’s
John Mulaney is extremely funny and talented… ie “my best meal ever” but this show fail to show the true extent of his talent.
Get rid of the “Works for Martin Short” schtick. It’s horrible. Martin Short eats up every ounce of air in the room.
Mulaney could probably be a pretty good show.
