The second season of Murder in the First is winding down on TNT. This detective show’s season ratings weren’t all that great inits first year but how is it doing this time around? Have the numbers gone up or down? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
In season two of Murder in the First, San Francisco homicide detectives Terry English (Taye Diggs) and Hildy Mulligan (Kathleen Robertson) investigate a series of murders with ramifications that could tear their department and city apart. Others in the cast include A.J. Buckley, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Laila Robins, Mo McRae, Mateus Ward, John Cothran, Raphael Sbarge, Lombardo Boyar, Ian Anthony Dale, Currie Graham, and Mimi Kirkland.
Debuting in June of 2014, the first season ended up averaging a 0.45 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.84 million viewers. These numbers weren’t bad but they weren’t stellar either. The cable channel could have gone either way with the series’ fate but they ended up renewing it for year two. It was renewed a month after the season finale aired — seemingly an indication that they were on the fence.
Season two of Murder in the First launched this past June. Compared to the series launch a year earlier, the season premiere was down by a whopping 47% in the demo and by 37% in viewership. Certainly not a good sign.
To date, the season’s been averaging a 0.32 demo rating (down 30%) and 2.1 million viewers (down 26%).
While all of TNT’s shows are way down in the ratings, Murder in the First’s ratings weren’t so good last year so a major drop looks extra bad.
The cable channel could decide to keep this series around for another season but I suspect, with these kind of numbers, they’ll opt to cancel it and put their resources elsewhere.
But, what do you think? Should this series be cancelled or renewed? If you ran TNT, would you order a third season?
YES!!!!!!! Definitely renew!!!!
Please RENEW – love the story lines and the actors. Too bad AJ Buckley is out because his character was great in the show-showed what a great actor he is in fact! Maybe give Ian Dale more of a character upgrade but like him in Hawaii Five 0 also…Taye & Kathleen are great! I hate when you get addicted to a show and then it gets canceled!
Great show renew
Renew! One of the most compelling shows on this summer, with excellent acting as well. Captivating.
This is my favorite show. Please do not cancel it. I like season two even better than season one because this season gave us a more in depth look at the characters and allowed some who were minor roles in season one, like Molk, to grow. Please give me a reason to watch TV on Monday nights by renewing this great show.
Renew it
Good show, with a compelling story and a good cast. Keeper! Much better that the fare on network TV. Mondays with Major Crimes & Murder in the First = favorite TV night.
Renew — my wife and I love the show and look forward to it.

I agree. It really started slooowww. Now it’s picking up and I love Kathleen and Taye. Please renew. It’s a really good cast. Just need a better writing staff for next season!
It’s a great show that needs to be renewed for the 3rd season (maybe with some marketing to increase viewership?).
cancel it! first season was OK but the second was just a big soap opera! It seemed like they just kept adding more storylines to see what stuck…
Renew please
Please renew…….love the show and actors!
I like the show. Please have a third season to have a decent show to watch.
