Last night’s season premiere of Glee was followed by the debut of a new sitcom, New Girl. Starring likable Zooey Deschanel, the series was given plenty of lead-in support from the musical dramedy — and ended up surpassing it.
Per the fast affiliate ratings, the series premiere of New Girl attracted a very healthy 4.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.08 million viewers. It actually built on Glee’s numbers (down 32% year-to-year) by a very impressive 24% and was first in its timeslot in the all-important demo. That’s no easy feat considering it had to square off against very tough competition on the other networks — NCIS: Los Angeles, The Biggest Loser, and the Dancing with the Stars results show.
New Girl performed 34% better than last year’s debut of Raising Hope in the same timeslot, and that was back when Glee was a whole lot stronger than it is today. With New Girl as a lead in, Raising Hope had one of its strongest nights to date.
We’ll have to wait and see how many people return to watch Deschanel and company next week but, right now, it’s looking like New Girl is a winner.
NOTE: You can now follow the weekly ratings.
What do you think? Did you watch New Girl last night? Will you return next week or do you think the show should be cancelled instead?

I am in love! Zooey is just so cute, they cant cancel this!
The pilot of Raising Hope was one of the funniest I have seen in like 30 years. That being said, I think it is brilliant to place this show between two tried and true fan faves. Just maybe it will get a chance to grow into its own. I enjoyed the show, but agree with Kevin, it will probably get canceled because it is not a reality or singing show. I can only hope that they are beginning to understand that we don’t want any more of those.
She’s just so very watchable. I’ll risk it.
Just wait until next week .. it will be canceled . Everyone knows if its not a reality show or dumbass singing show Fox will cancel it.
I’m skipping this one. This sitcom won’t get a second season.
I am not surprised. Deschanel is a well know actress, and like Kutcher on Two and a Half Men should bring in a number of people because of her previous success and celebrity. I was actually worried that Glee would hurt the premiere, because the quality of Glee has been falling fast, and I expected that fall to continue, which it did. Glee was so boring that it was nice to have New Girl to wake me up.
