The alphabet network has decided they don’t need quite as many episodes of No Ordinary Family. This is just another indication that the show will be cancelled in May. The freshman series may revolve around a family with special powers but the ratings have been anything but super.
Starring Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz, No Ordinary Family debuted on September 28th to a 3.2 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 10.69 million viewers. That was a good start but the numbers dropped by 16% by episode two and have essentially kept falling ever since. The latest installment hit a new low with a 1.4 rating in the demo and 4.77 million viewers, making it the lowest-rated scripted show on the network.
Back in late October, despite the falling numbers, ABC ordered nine additional episodes, bringing No Ordinary Family’s season total to 22 installments. ABC execs have now decided to cut the order down to 20 episodes.
According to The Futon Critic, this week’s episode will be an original, number 17. The next two weeks will be filled by repeats and then the final three episodes of the season (and likely the series) will air after that. The finale will air on April 5th.
What do you think? Are you disappointed by the news? Is No Ordinary Family worth saving?

I like the show and each week gets a little more interesting and attention grabbing. I was so glad to see a different type of show that was a little beyond reality which is why I like to watch TV – get out of reality. I think it is very enjoyable and hope people will give it a little more of a chance.
No ordinary family is one of those rare T.V series that only comes along every so often, We had Heroes and Flash Forward that actually were entertaining before low and behold the powers that be came along and cancelled them!! Are we really that surprised that once again a great show such as this gets cancelled? and is replaced by such crap as the biggest loser!! For me “No ordinary family ” is up there on my list of shows to watch just for the entertainment value alone, this show has a good script, good cast, comedy, action and drama… Read more »
Watched the first few episodes and liked it but for some reason, stopped watching it. Think I was still ticked off Heroes was gone? Who knows… Just couldnt keep my interest and I love Benz too…
I wanted to really like this show…. I mean who doesn’t like superhero shows, right? But after all this time it’s just kinda – blah. I still watch it hoping that whatever it’s missing is finally found. Maybe more action… maybe more crime fighting that includes the entire family…
So far it just feels like the show would have been a better fit for ABC Family – but then again I think I read ABC Family is trying to get away from the “Family” part of that network too.
I’ve got to agree with the majority here. It deserves to be canceled. It had promise, but never quite gelled. “No Ordinary Heroes” started out too slow and was a little too Disneyfied. It needed more grit and realism. The show has had some great moments, but that’s it.
I watch the show because I think Julie Benz is a fun actress to watch While it has gotten a bit better, I totally understand why some people gave up on it! I also prefer Fringe, Chuck, Supernatural, and others (including reruns of really great shows, like Lost, Heroes, and Buffy)! Also – I loved Heroes and was devestated when it was cancelled, so I feel like – if No Ordinary Family didn’t get cancelled, then there is NO reason that Heroes should have been! I just hope they end it with a resolution, rather than a silly cliffhanger!
I’m with AngieBatgirl on the son. He really bugged me and still does. To be honest, I really wanted to like this show but at the moment have the last 3-4 eps on the DVR in stasis while I watch Fringe, Supernatural, Chuck and others as or right after they air. Think it got too bogged down in the Bad Guy Boss plotline.
This show has gotten so much better in the last four episodes or so… it’s gotten darker and more interesting, though to be fair, the “family” of four itself hasn’t gotten any more interesting. Where the interest lies is in ancillary characters, particularly Katie’s conflicted boyfriend Joshua (who we recently learned is even more deeply connected to the main bad guy than we thought). You know the family actually ~killed~ one of the bad guys recently? In their own home?? Shocking. That said, I won’t be too upset (or surprised) if No Ordinary Family gets cancelled. It started out so… Read more »
I’m getting so sick and tired of shows getting cancelled too soon because people don’t have the patience to stick with it and see how it evolves and gets better!
We live in a society of instant gratification and people want to see “action, action, action” and that is just sad!
“No Ordinary Family” was a bit wobbly in the beginning, but is just finding it’s footing and now it might get cancelled! COME ON! Keep the show!!!
I like Reeser, Benz and Chiklis, but this show just hasn’t managed to keep or attract viewers. I had high hopes but once the pilot aired I realized the show wasn’t gritty enough and seemed a bit campy and vacant. I have a huge list of television shows that I watch and for the first time I’m not at all concerned about any of my shows getting canceled. The only exception is Fringe. I want that show to survive, but it’s not looking good either. I’m content knowing that there are several pilots for next fall that sound interesting and… Read more »
I wanted to enjoy No Ordinary Family but I bailed too (oddly enough by the sixth episode.) My reason was silly though. It just bugged me to no end that the father was playing hero jumping around, stopping cars and bullets but NEVER in a disguise. Yet every episode it seemed like the family’s identities were at risk. I just checked out.
It actually has gotten much better the last 8 episodes or so. I agree the first 6 were not good. I’d say check out the last 4 that are available online and see.
Maybe they are no ordinary family but the serie is pretty ordinary, I’m surprise that ABC still airs that.
I watched a few episodes because I love Kay Panabaker, but she has few lines and the whole thing is just boring.
I like the show and wish it wouldn’t get cancelled. It has a lot of potential but there are a lot of quirks about it that make no sense. For example, the mother has super speed, which would also technically mean she has super strength due to an object moving at high velocity exhibits lots of force. As a top scientist she would definitely know rudimentary physics. There are many other things like this in the show which if culled upon would make it so much better. It’s a great idea, the Writer/Director is/are just going about it all wrong.
I’d be glad if they canceled it. I started watching it but I bailed after 6 episodes. The kid who plays the son was super annoying. That’s not the only reason. I just wasn’t interested. I didn’t care about any of the characters and I would’ve forgotten that it was even on if I hadn’t set the DVR to record it.
