Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

My wife and I are deeply grieving that Prime Suspect has been canceled. The acting and writing was superior to anything else on American television. The characters “drew you in”, and the acting was very real. It reminded us of the original “Prime Suspect” show from Britain on PBS. There is nothing else on television that interests us. If only the Mario Bello Prime Suspect could be picked up by PBS for a Masterpiece Theatre series.
Was a different type of police/cop show was good to watch at least it wasn’t, some reality show am going to miss it guess I will boycott Brian Williams rock center. Just cause.why a least didn’t they let it play out?
Prime Suspect was one of the best shows on this season. The promos they showed beforehand were horrible. They almost made me not want to watch it because they were so obnoxious. The show they promoted on the ads seemed totally different than the actual show itself. Once I started watching it was the best show, great acting and realistic. I’m hoping it will be picked back up and maybe stuck in where one of the hours for the biggest losers are. One hour is long enough, I’m not sure why 2 hours are needed.
really, there is only a handful of good show on television, NBC SUCKS BIG TIME. We will miss watching this show on Thursday. I am a senior citizen, but i can still tell good from poop. most of tv is just pure poop. this is enough to make even a woman want to become a monk.
I really liked “Prime Suspect” NBC really messed up on this they started the series on Monday nights then moved it to Thursday night. I watched Person of Interest and Prime Suspect every Thursday night these are the only two shows I got into this past year. Disappointed would be an understatement!
What? This shows is great. NBC needs to think of alternatives to where/how it gets it’s ratings. They are clearly out of touch or skewed.
I loved this show! What a great cast, and what great characters. I will be less likely to watch NBC in the future.
Devastated. Only thing to watch on Thursday. Thought it wouldn’t measure up to Helen Mirren’s series. But it was so good, great for women. Losing the strong woman on CSI too.
Precisely why I’ve stayed away from NBC for years. I watched Prime Suspect on the recommendation of a friend and loved it. I regret taking the chance on a major network. This was a show as good as NYPD Blue and the network would rather spend it’s money on Sh*tcoms and Reality TV. Shameful.
I absolutely loved this show! I had never been interested in detective shows until Prime Suspect was on. I looked forward to it every Thursday night, and suddenly it was not on for awhile, so I just checked online and saw the cancellation! Almost wanted to cry – this was an excellent series for a woman like myself. I certainly hope it re-appears as there is not much on that has a story with actual feelings involved in it….
I can’t believe this.. Ive been searching for this show for weeks and when my DVR couldnt even find it listed, I was shocked! This was by far my favorite show on TV… And yes, I am over 49!
Totally pissed off!! Prime suspect was a great show!! Shame on you NBC!
What a shame! The only new show in any network’s line-up that we made sure to catch every week. Great acting, good stories, adult-themed content without the “adults only” language and explicit sex that are rampant in what passes for adult entertainment these days. Networks, take note: we are 50-somethings with more discretionary income than your average 18 to 49 year old, and we want something more intelligent to watch than “reality TV” and mindless sit-coms!
Well said. And I’m 28! 🙂
Shame on you. Such a good show with interesting characters and plots. Bring it back. I’m in the “Beyond 50” age group.
I love this show. I agree with Lone Star. This show is brilliant. Great acting, excellent writing/story lines and characters. I’m disappointed. Really looked forward to this each week.
