Rectify has been cancelled by SundanceTV. Season four will be the final season, and it will air on the network in Fall 2016.
Rectify was the first original series to air on the network, so this was not an easy decision for SundanceTV to make. Production on the fourth and final season will begin in April.

PEABODY AWARD-WINNING “RECTIFY,” SUNDANCE TV’S FIRST ORIGINAL SERIES, TO RETURN FOR ITS FOURTH AND FINAL SEASON IN FALL 2016
PASADENA, CA – January 8, 2016 – SundanceTV today announced from the Television Critics’ Association (TCA) Press Tour that “Rectify,” the network’s Peabody Award-winning drama, will begin production on its fourth and final season in April and premiere in fall 2016.
Created, written and directed by Academy Award(R) winner Ray McKinnon and produced by Emmy Award(R) winners Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”), “Rectify” first premiered on SundanceTV in April 2013. Throughout its first three seasons, “Rectify” has garnered an outpouring of critical acclaim and a steadfast cult audience, along with a 2015 Peabody Award, a Writers Guild Award nomination and five Critics’ Choice TV Award nominations, among many other accolades.
“‘Rectify’ is in many ways an existential story that was allowed to come to life during an existential era in serial storytelling,” said McKinnon. “It was a case of perfect timing with the perfect partners. I have always felt that ‘Rectify’ could end at any time or just as easily continue. Well, not easily. But there is no perfect ‘end’ for this story nor for these characters. They will continue to live on. We just won’t document them any longer. And the timing of this ‘non-end’ end feels exactly right. SundanceTV has been a dream to work with on this journey; I am so grateful to have been allowed the freedom to tell the tale I wanted to tell in the way I felt it should be told with the mad and beautiful collaborators who joined me on the ride… Oh wait, we haven’t shot the final season yet. I’ll get back to you.”
“Rectify” follows the life of Daniel Holden (Aden Young), who returns to his small hometown in Georgia after serving 19 years on death row. Having spent his entire adult life waiting to die, Daniel must now try to find a way to cope with his past and forge a “normal” life with a future before him. Daniel, who is still struggling with adapting to the routine aspects of modern life, affects everyone whom he comes in contact with, including his very fractured family, those working to protect him and those working against him on the side of law and order.

Very slow; I kept watching only as I kept expecting it to get better….especially the Tawny/Daniel /Teddy storyline which kept going nowwhere…also unless it’s my TV (decent one, a Toshiba Smart TV) the sound quality was awful; I could barely understand what they were saying half the time, and the show for some reason kept on focusing on irrelevant “things” as if to “fill up the show”. While some of the characters (Daniel mostly) and Tawny were interesting, all in all, I thought this show was one big crashing bore. Just wish I”d have known before it started that it… Read more »
I adore this show, and didn’t know about it til now because I found it on Netflix. Dang, I’m so sorry it didn’t continue, but I’m just going to rewatch it right away because it’s so amazing, and I’m so in love with the characters! Thanks so much for this show!
Please make a season five please please please it did not end them right!!!
I loved this show but would like for one final show. Seems the left us up in the air about who did it
I’ve become deeply involved in this story — my husband and I are watching it in lieu of the political chaos on MSNBC — and I find the actors excellent and their evolution convincing. The writing is, for the most part, excellent. That said, the men are more closely examined than the women. Amantha has begun to annoy me (we’re in season 3) with her wisecracking. But more centrally, I’m not convinced that Daniel is a southerner. I’d prefer someone more like Chris Cooper or Matthew McConaughey. I get that his stilted academic way of talking is b/c he’s spent… Read more »
Awesome show with WONDERFUL actors. They all were excellent in their roles. Daniel made me laugh. I would love to see a spin-off of this great show
This show was recommended to me several times over the years and for some reason I finally decided to give it a shot. It was nothing like I had imagined it would be. It was an awesome show. Well written and deeply moving. I inhaled all 4 seasons in less than one week’s time. I will miss them all.
They left the whole fan base in the air. They need to make a 5th, season plus more and tie everything together too many unanswered questions especially who actually killed Hannah…
I agree with you
I found this show during a vety difficult time in my life. It has everything and nothing to do with the devastating loneliness of the human condition. After I finish the last episode of the final Season 4, I’ll start over again with Episode 1 of Season 1. I need Aden Young’s “Daniel” to remind me thst I am not alone in a world where I don’t quite belong. Brilliant filmmaking.
I agree with SueL that I would like to see how the family heals through what lies ahead for Daniel and the Holden family that is certainly bound to open old wounds since they all would have to relive publicly what happened 20 years earlier. If Rectify isn’t brought back, the last season showed that they are all capable of healing and that Daniel may finally be exonerated of the murder of his girl friend, Hannah. Sadly, I never know when watching on Netflix that a series has been cancelled. Guess I should have researched first. But again, if the… Read more »
I agree with you
I would very much like to see a season 5, and maybe a season 6 of Rectify. I would like to see how this family heals when Daniel is finally exonerated. I would like to see this series make the statement of the mistake being owned, and an effort made to make his life and that of his family whole again.
such a powerful story. I am sad to see it end. I hope they change their mind and have another season.
I,just started watching Rectify and am already hooked. Such a tragic story told by amazing writers and portrayed superbly by Aden Young. I am so saddened to hear it was cancelled, I was looking forward to learning more about the Holden’s.
Like so many other comments here, I’ll offer my “Thanks,” for a series well-written, well-produced, well directed and well-acted, by everyone involved in “Rectify.” I won’t attempt to, or pretend to explain how deeply I enjoyed the story of Daniel’s development from the first episode through the last, his family’s struggles through Daniel’s incarceration and release, and the others in and around Daniel’s life and how he was affected by them, and how he affected them. I also think it was a great show, as it was, when it was. And like many other shows, within and outside of this… Read more »
Thank you, Mr. Ray McKinnon, for raising the bar and setting the standard on how an extremely well-written series, should be portrayed. Thank you for the reality, in all its raw truth while giving the audience permission to respectfully share in the most intimate of settings (with all participants clothed). It was nice to share in the great sense of ‘hope’. Something we seem to need in abundance these days. Aiden Young was the perfect choice to portray Daniel Holden (incredibly believable and grounding). Truly, a joy to watch yet extremely sad to learn that season four was the finale.… Read more »
