Recently, we reported that TNT had cancelled Rizzoli & Isles. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, TNT chief Kevin Reilly discussed why he’s ending the popular procedural.
Rizzoli & Isles is currently in the middle of its sixth season and will end after a short seventh season this summer.
Speaking the Hollywood Reporter at the TCA winter press tour, Reilly said he pulled the plug on Rizzoli & Isles because the series has run its course:
If I came in and said, year two of Rizzoli & Isles, we’re pulling the plug on it, I would have probably gotten some [feedback]. They have not said no to me on anything and I don’t think they would have said no, but I think they would have gone like, ‘Really?! You want to do that?’ And, honestly, that would have been a stupid move. I’ve got a show that people love, that’s performed really well, why would I do that? Coming to the end of a seven-year run, it’s an easier decision. Everybody involved, from producers to talent, are like, ‘It’s been a good run. We’re going to be one of a couple cable shows that has made it to that 100-plus [episode] number. There have been very few cable shows that have made that many episodes. So let’s go out when we’re strong and not limp.'”
For years, Rizzoli & Isles has been one of TNT’s flagship series, bringing in good ratings and an average of around four million viewers per episode in season six so far. The series’ cancellation seems to be part of Reilly’s larger revamping of both TNT and TBS as networks with acclaimed original material.
Rizzoli & Isles is just the latest dumpee for TNT. In December, three of the network’s dramas were cancelled—Legends, Public Morals, and Agent X.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Rizzoli & Isles? Do you think it’s time the series end?
Pretty good show to have been cancelled? I just hope you don’t replace it with Crap? What ever happened to,”if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”?
Enjoyed show, disappointed they never held on to the Casey-Rizzoli romance, would have been a great story line. Understand it has run it’s course, but the junk coming up is not worth watching.
I hatell that it is ending I am going to really miss the show . I am hoping to see the actors in new shows..
I will really miss this show too bad the junk stays on and good shows are takne off
Very sad
Hey! Even the TNT Boss can make a mistake, but not too many or He or She will be cancelled.
I wish it would go on and on. I really love this show but all great things must end, I guess. There have been many programs that have gone be the wayside that I loved. Time has a way of doing that. I will really miss it!
I hate that this is going away. I really, really, really love this show.
I think it was a mistake. One of the few shows that held my interest. The characters were developed and each had a purpose. Maybe a new series of Jane & Maura in Paris will come of it, but probably not. I dont watch anything else on this station so I guess I’m done with it
It was the one show I looked forward to every Monday. There is nothing but trash on most days. Bones, NCIS,And Rizzoli and criminal minds are some of the best shows
I will miss Rizzoli & Isles a lot. It was my favorite show. The story line was smart and clever; the actors are amazing and totally click; and, it was good entertainment. I suppose there is a good argument for going out on top but I sure would have liked to have had this for several more years.
very disappointed that it is being cancelled. Our family loved this show and it was always something we did together. With so much crap on tv this was one that was well written, good actors and great to watch.
Really annoyed at the end of Rizzolli & Isles! Why end a successful show, sans sex and extreme violence, that appeals to female baby boomers, the most economically important group in the US.
TV does not need any more explicit & violent shows. Loved Sasha on NCIS (they killed her off) and loved her on R&I. You TV execs are CLUELESS! Good luck!
I love Rizzoli & Isles. A very smart funny enjoyable show. It’s a shame they pulled the plug, I can’t imagine why. I’m hopeful like Tom Selleck does his occasional made for TV movies that perhaps they can bring this wonderful cast together for some movies.
I hate the cancellation! This show had strong women in their own field. It showed loyalty, trust, and uncompromising friendship. This show taught respect and morals in which have been lost through the years. I am sorry we are losing good programs because there are no good writers to keep them going. I have watched TV going down for years. The 30 minute “comedy” shows, the “reality” shows, and even trying to bring back game shows with writers who can not possibly understand what made them great and funny. “Comedy” acting stupid, “Reality” I see all the “reality” I can… Read more »
