Is Saturday Night Live getting its own spin-off? TVLine reports NBC is considering a spin-off based on the show’s “Weekend Update” segment.
Currently hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, the long-running segment offers comedic commentary on current events. Previous hosts include Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, Dennis Miller, and Norm Macdonald.
According to TVLine, the idea for the spin-off comes as a result of SNL‘s increased ratings since the election and Donald Trump’s inauguration. Viewership for the weekly sketch show is reportedly up 22 percent.
A “Weekend Update” spin-off wouldn’t be completely novel for NBC. In 2008, Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler hosted an extended, Thursday night version of “Weekend Update” during the presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain. The series returned in 2009 and briefly in 2012.
What do you think? Do you watch Saturday Night Live? Would you watch a “Weekend Update” spin-off series?
Weekend update spin off is a great idea. Love Seth and Colin.
