Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

I love this show I even got my friends and family watching it but now its off! Please fox being back sons!
I like this show very much. It has great potential as a neat family, with families can really watch and enjoy without worrying about explaining what the language means to kids. I thoroughly enjoyed the episodes aired and was looking forward to rest of them. This is the show for me with three lovable boys and Angela. From the start, I knew the spot after three animated shows was not the correct spot. Compared to a show like Two and a half men, with all its innuendos and sexual content, this is the cleanest show for prime time. I sincerely… Read more »
I think Fox needs to get a grip this is the same network that cancelled ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. C’mon Sons of Tucson is a excellent show look at all the positive comments. At least have the R & D do another focus group and see the response. Fox it’s 2010 don’t get it twisted get it right.
PLEASE don’t cancel this show!! it’s hilarious!! why do networks let some shows go onnnnnnnnnnnn and onnnnnnnnnn forever? and only give new ones a a few episodes?
and 7:30 come on give ’em a fair shot!! i’m sooo sick of all the reality shows. maybe ABC can buy it and air it after “modern family”?!! then it will do it well.
I was looking forward to watching this show last night, and to find out it wasn’t on, what a disappointment!!! Finally get something that we enjoy to watch a get some good laughs, and it is pulled. Bring it back FOX!!! ditto all the positive comments from everyone else.
Why is Fox afraid to put the show on in the 8:30 slot if thats what it was designed to be? I don’t understand the networks sometime, but I am only a viewer. Sons Of Tucson deserves a chance. It is the best sitcom to come out in several years. Edgy AND funny. We like it! Bring it back FOX!!!
Finally I have found a show that transcends the obvious. Subtle humor, terrific acting, and wildly innovative dialogue, made this the first television show worth watching in years. The network gave it no chance. Another sad day for television.
I absolutely love Sons of Tucson and looked at it as the best weekly program I tune into (and I don’t watch a lot of TV) What sorry ass person made this stupid mistake? What lame exec thought to pull this extremely funny yet warm TV program off and leave on reality garbage and tons and tons of commercials?! Get Sons of Tucson back on now and not in June…..remember Family Guy got tossed until enough viewers called, emailed and wrote complaining about its being pulled. Damn! Can’t we get at least one solid and intelligent program left for the… Read more »
Great show. Bad move pulling it American dad was never good but that was a bad timeslot for sot.
Most likely not gonna get renewed. We’re talking about Fox here, they cancel more shows than any other network. I mean just look at Til Death. Even brought some hope by uncanceling and bringing it back for season 4. Granted delaying it will get us more epidsodes, but just know this: it’s already gone. Yeah thats right, its already gone. I don’t know who the Fox executs are kidding. I mean really. Face it Fox you got a crappy track record, your not fooling anyone.
THANK YOU to tvseriesfinale – you are my trusted source of information to find out the fate of tv shows that matter to me, and i’m so thankful for you…
what an admirable gesture of mr. berfield – i hope “sons” gets picked up (you hear that, FOX? please give the show a family friendly yet not dead air timeslot, and please keep around a few family friendly options?) and i will follow his future projects because he’s a person who thinks of more than himself.
warmest wishes to all,

Sons of Tucson needs to be put back on, i think the story is great so far. The show was hilarious.
Wow, they put this show on hiatus yet keep shows like Glee on the air. I liked this show and thought it was cool that Justin Berfield was the producer. I met Justin back in 2005 when me and a friend were in LA for vacation. I met Justin outside Mcdonalds near the studio and he was very friendly. I hope the show is back on soon and/or Justin does another show.
Tyler Labine is hilarious, and if given a chance (and talented writers) he could make a show very profitable and fun to watch. He stole the show with REAPER (which should have gotten another season) and if given time could really take S.O.T places. I was disappointed when when my dvr showed up with AMERICAN DAD (which I do like) instead of S.O.T. Get it together fox! Thank the gods you’re not letting FRINGE go!
its a good show!! fox just needs to give it a better timeslot!
