Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

I love this show. I have only seen 2 episodes and thought it was just as funny as Malcolm in the Middle. It is a shame when a show such as this is pulled and is replaced with crap such as reality TV.
i love the show and i would like to watch it but i can’t so that does not make some people happy it takes time for a tv show to grow i would like it to be at 8:30 instead of 7:30
I personally enjoyed the show. I liked how it wasn’t the same as a lot of other things we see on television today. I think it deserves to have another shot considering it’s bad time slot. In the past there have been many shows whose ratings and veiws weren’t very good at first but somehow manage to get up there and be a success. I mean cancelling? especially after 4 episodes? That doesn’t seem very fair. I’m hoping for the best and that when it comes back on air it stays! “thank you tucson !” (:
This show is engaging and funny. Fox continues to demonstrate their complete inability to relate to its audience. They appear to to canceling this show when they have already created 2 Family Guy spin-offs. How many times have they canceled Family Guy already?
Whatever, is this’nt even political but Rupert Murdoch already made Myspace EXTINCT, it looks like TV is next.
The show was a great one ever since malcom in the middle endded iv been looking for a show to replace it and sons of tucson was that show now I don’t know about you but the show should be given another chance at a differnt time.
well i think it was a great show hope it comes back
I loved this show!!why are they doing this??
This show started off clever and turned into hilarious. I just tried to find episode 5 on hulu and am so disappointed to find that the show is already on hiatus vs. cancelled (?) – and after only 4 episodes. The creators of Sons of Tucson melded family comedy with adult humor in a delightful way. Like other commentors, I wish Hollywood could allow things to cook a little longer before throwing them away – what a waste of talent and hard work. I will eagerly watch for the show’s hopeful return in June.
I thought this was a super funny show and hope it returns with a good timelot, and that the network backs it. I am tired of shows being pulled after only a few airings and not given the time to grow the audience. Then, they “give them a chance’ but don’t let anyone know when it is coming back and airing, thus losing the initial fans they had at the beginning. If anyone from Fod is reading this, PLEASE bing it back for another season, put it on at a decent time so families can watch it, and then PROMOTE… Read more »
I love this show personally, my whole family does. Fox should keep it on, it’s the most entertaining sitcom I’ve seen in quite some time and my family looks forward to seeing it each week. I am not exception, I love it. I think SOT really brings something to table. Please keep it on and give it time to grow Fox!
I love the show. Fox should give it a chance. they should have put it in the right time slot to begin with. Did they put malcolm in the middle on at 9:30? no they didn’t and look how popular it became. they also didn’t advertise about it enough. People wont know about it unless you tell them about it. Its their own fault. I anybody from fox is reading this, please don’t take it off the air. bring it back before June and put it into a better time slot. If you cancel it you will be sorry. People… Read more »
I really hope that the show comes back soon enough and with a better audience so that it can stick around. I really enjoyed the episodes that have played already and the show makes me laugh.
the question was “do you think sons of tuscon still has a chance?”… not if the show was any good.
this is the fox network we’re talking about….so no, this show is dead.
Gotta say, really liked the show. I might even write in for the first time.
think the show is very witty and entertaining
