At the beginning of the 2017-18 television season, the Alphabet network introduced just one new comedy, The Mayor, which was cancelled midway into season one, due to low ratings. Now the Splitting Up Together TV show has made its debut on ABC. Does star Jenna Fischer still have a little of that Nielsen ratings magic left over from The Office? Will Splitting Up Together be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.   *Status update below.

A family sitcom, based on a Danish TV series, Splitting Up Together stars Fischer, along with Oliver Hudson, Bobby Lee, Diane Farr, Lindsay Price, Olivia Keville, Van Crosby, Sander Thomas and Kelsey Asbille. The ABC TV series centers on a married couple, Lena (Fischer) and Martin (Hudson), who have lost that lovin’ feeling. Having arrived at the conclusion that everyone would be happier if they divorced, Lena and Martin decide to pull the plug, but to minimize the impact on their three kids, they’re “bird nesting.” The parent who is on-duty in a given week lives in the house, with the children, while the other decamps to the garage. Once they’re apart, they begin to see their own failures and the other’s contributions. Splitting up together, like this, just might reignite their love.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival.
