Though Stargate Universe was cancelled midway through its second season (the last 10 episodes will air in the Spring), executive producer Brad Wright thinks there’s a chance that the story could continue. Wright contends that, “We haven’t given up on finishing the story we started.”
Wright was traveling when the cancellation news came down from Syfy and is now looking for a way to continue the series in some form. Wright tells Chicago Now’s Curt Wagner that he and MGM, the studio that owns the rights to the Stargate franchise, are discussing several possible options. He said, “It’s heartening to see so many people upset about Syfy’s cancellation of the show but it’s important to remember that their license fee represented only a portion of our total budget.”
While this is positive news, its a long way from the show being saved. Based on what Wright has said, it would seem that a substantial portion of the SGU budget comes from other sources like DVD sales. A possible option could be to do direct-to-DVD movies but then, fans are still waiting for a Stargate Atlantis movie. The series could be sold to another channel but that’s always a tough sell.
What do you think? Would you like to see Stargate Universe continue in some form — as a DVD movie, online short videos, comics, or novels? Or, would you rather see one of the other shows in the franchise return in some way?

The problem with Universe was that they tried to pass it off as a Stargate series. This was in no way, shape, or form anything but a soap opera that eventually became a science fiction action show. It was never Stargate, though. Had they given it a different title, without the Stargate expectations, it might have done much better. It is no surprise that it was canceled.
I can’t believe it. Why do the good shows get cancelled and crappy ones survive?
SGU was my favorite show. Maybe a miracle will happen.
They cancel Stargate Atlantis when it was the highest rated show in it’s time slot and replace it with Universe. Wasn’t thrilled with the news until I started watching Universe. Great show! Now they cancel that one! I mean, really…
I really enjoyed all Stargate programs. I have watched these since they started way back when and am the proud owner of SG1 Seasons 7-10 all SGA seasons and will comence purchasing SGU. This is very disturbing since these where the only programs I watched on SyFy. I would see the SG programs which-ever network they move to. I am sure MGM and the Stargate franchise will find a way because as there programs showed they have the will.
ABC can save V (which is decent) , but SyFy can’t save ANY Stargate. What gives? Paying too many actors? Drop some of them…shoot even TBS and Tyler Perry knew to do this with Meet the Browns..and if THEY can survive I know Stargate can.
Um, I feel for the people involved in so much as this is a tough economy to be without a job, but geez this was a terrible show. While I will agree that the second season is better than the first, first impressions on this show were awful despite high expectations. BW pissed off his base by allowing his ego to run unchecked, and then delivered an awful product that no one wanted to watch. By the second season SyFy executives decided to “help” by expanding their smackdown slots and putting SGU in a time slot with a lot of… Read more »
Another nail in the coffin of television as a main source of entertainment. Way to go there, wizards of smart at Syfy! Now I have no reason to watch your channel AT ALL!
I’m calling my satellite provider today and canceling my subscription. From now on its gonna be internet based video on demand!
well I agrea SGU will be missed. I think they should try to sell the series to the bbc america myself.
I would like to see Stargate Universe picked up by another channel if possible. I was an avid fan of the show and was disappointed to hear that Syfy in their “infinite wisdom” chose to cancel yet another great Sci-Fi show. I hope the store will be able to live on either by continuing the series on another channel that is more appreciative of creative talent brought by the cast and writers or by a DVD.
I was so sad to see that this show was being cancelled. Just when they had revealed the basis of the show they go an end it. They were building for at least 5 or 6 seasons worth of episodes. They had so many little stories and then the big picture all set up to make this show go on for a while. I hope that it’s brought back somewhere and it can continue with what they started. It was really starting to get interesting the further in they were getting. More encounters with alien races and all that. I… Read more »
I loved the show and only wished it had a little more action and special effects. I hope someone saves it. Besides the network’s are riddled with crime drama’s we need the variety.
I’m just finding out that the show was canceled. WHAT?! I’ve watched all of the Stargate shows…I’m still just at a loss. Syfy seems to be the problem and who owns them. Seriously, this is a great show. Farscape, Atlantis, now SGU. These are awesome tv shows. I don’t go to the movies much, but would definitely pay to see these on the big screen. Something has to be done…all of them have such a following.
ok heres a big surprise my new favorite show is gone again. first the sarah conor chronicles (fox’s fault) then atlantis……..but at least after atlantis i had an ending now this. i am from canada and they put this show on friay night at 11 oclock and i donno what u people in other countries do at 11 on friday but in canada 50% of the population is drinking and the other 50% is sleeping and no one is watching syfy but tuesday at 7 or 9? then we are watching tv . so if u change the time slots… Read more »
Man it is messed up this show could be going. Best sci-fi show I’ve seen in a very long time and that’s saying a lot since I consider myself a connoisseur, even a picky snob of sorts. The show’s got so much plot possibilities and potential and the depth of characterization and “human-ness” possibly surpasses any other sci-fi show ever made. The Rush/Young/Telford tri-valry is superb, love the characters of Greer and Eli, the military/civilian dichotomy, I can go on and on. I know money sucks right now everywhere but I think this show ending would be killing what would… Read more »
I have to agree with many of the comments made. I use to watch SYFY like religion. But with Smackdown, this is not SYFY. That, is junk. Good science fiction is about drama and thinking out of the box. It’s about seeing ourselves and the life we live through a new deminsion. How can you cancel SGU? If you make a DVD I will buy it. But it not the same as waiting a full week for a great show to come on. I watch HBO and they have had some great shows and SYFY has productions every bit as… Read more »
