Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) can now beat his sword into a plowshare, since there will not be a second season of The Bastard Executioner TV show. FX has cancelled the Tuesday night drama after one season of ten episodes.
According to Deadline, creator Kurt Sutter, who also plays the Dark Mute character, knew the 14th century period drama would not return for season two, when he filmed the season one and series finale.
Deadline reports Sutter took out ads (below) in the trades, to thank the cast, crew, and the network. Said cast includes: Jones, Sutter, Stephen Moyer, Matthieu Charneau, Katey Sagal, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Sam Spruell, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Timothy V. Murphy, Sarah White, Sarah Sweeny, Ethan Griffiths, and Ross O’Hennessy.
According to Deadline, Sutter did not break the bad news to the cast at the time, as the decision was not then final, and he did not want cancellation news to affect production. Last week, star Katy Sagal admitted she was not sure if there would be a second season.
As of episode nine, which aired Tuesday, November 10, 2015, The Bastard Executioner was not faring well in the ratings. Its to-date season average ratings in the 18-49 demographic was a mere 0.45, with a total average audience size of 1.26 million viewers. Dateline mentions that the ratings were not high enough, considering the cost of shooting on location, in Wales.
This show has been added to the growing list of shows that won’t be back next season.
What do you think? Do you like FX’s The Bastard Executioner TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled? Would you have watched a second season?
Why&the world would you take such a great show off? Seems to me that when there a great show on or even close to being decent you show or even clean there is the lame excuse of ratings. Can you believe that there are real yes real people who do not like zombie walking dead! Profanity is liked Nor half naked or naked bodies! Also do you really hear & read people’s feelings? What happen if all the sudden people said no more tvs & threw them out? If truly think about it we TV veiwers pay you all by… Read more »
This was a fabulous episodic! It was like a combination of Game of Thrones and The DeVinci Code. I wish the powers that be would re think the decision to cancel.
I LOVED this show, and can’t believe that Kurt Sutter acted like a spoiled brat because this show did not immediately catch on the way he thought it would. Sometimes it takes a while for people to even FIND a show on as late as this one always was. I would like to act like a spoiled brat like he has, and scream and kick my heels on the floor, until he brought it back. One of the few new shows that we enjoyed.
OMG! Why would you cancel the best show out there? So much romance and history! Not to mention the hottest cutie, Lee Jones! My friends and I couldn’t get enough of him! Even our men were looking forward to watching! Ahhh! Please bring us more of that premium viewing pleasure!
I am still saddened by the cancelation of this show! I still think about this show and wish it were back on!
My husband and I watched every episode of The B*stard Executioner and absolutely loved the show. We were looking forward to its return for a second season. We were talking about it tonight, so I decided to check to see when it was coming back on. We are very disappointed that it is not returning. So many television shows are so much alike, but this one is very unique. I hope the powers that be will reconsider and bring it back. Give it a second chance. Sometimes it takes a while for people to find it. Thanks for hearing me… Read more »
I honestly cried when I got the news of the cancellation!! My son who is 26, his friend who is 27, and I who am 66 watched every episode together, all loved it and couldn’t wait a week for the next episode!! Is there any possibility that another venue could pick it up so that we could find out what the real end is? I was truly saddened that the last episode appeared to be so rushed to tie all the ends together in 1 Hr! Pleases bring it back, somewhere!! Even a movie would satisfy most of us, I… Read more »
I truly loved that show and think about it all the time. It was my favorite! This cancellation seriously saddens me. So many people don’t appreciate really good programming these days.
This was a huge waste of time
Shouldn’t have went past the 3rd show. It was sooooo bad. After Sons ended I was looking forward to this show. Thanks Kurt Sutter for wasting 3 hours of my life I am not getting back. Won’t be watching any future shows you create.
It wasn’t Sons, but got better with each episode.
The hero is WILKIN Brattle, not Wilson Brattle.
I love the show. I watched the season recently and was disappointed to learn their would not be another season! I didn’t watch out earlier because I didn’t have time.:(
Every time a new show worth watching comes someone finds a reason to take it off the air.
I’m very disappointed that the show will not return. The characters were multi-dimensional, and the plots were unpredictable. Historical drama set in unfamiliar times is exciting and thought-provoking. I think the title was a put-off in the beginning, but the promos were tantalizing. I will wonder for a long time what happens to my favorite characters.
This is amazing. I love the fact that you really have to pay attention to what is going on. There are too many shows now a days that you can just half listen to and still pick it up. It really is a smarter person’s show. I liked the time period it took place in. I would really like you to reconsider your decision to pull the show. I really enjoyed. My husband enjoyed it too, but it was a little to late for him. Please put it back on.
