Last night, NBC aired the series finale of The Event. As fans know all too well, the series has struggled in the ratings for much of the season and the network decided to cancel the show last week after just 20 episodes.
The Event started decently in the ratings but the numbers quickly declined. Once they fell as low as a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, NBC decided to pull it and planned to relaunch the series in early 2011. When they did, the ratings dropped even lower.
The producers knew there was a good chance that The Event wouldn’t be back for a second season and tried to give viewers some sense of satisfaction. They constructed the finale so that it would answer some questions but leave plenty of room for a second season, just in case they got lucky. Though it was cancelled, there’s still a glimmer of hope that it may continue elsewhere.
If you missed it, you can catch up with what happened on the series finale or watch it below. Either way, we’d like to know what you thought.
Was there enough information to satisfy you? Would you recommend that people watch the series or not bother because it doesn’t have a definitive ending? Which unresolved questions or storylines will bug you the most?

My wife and I really enjoyed The Event. Please bring it back for a second season.
cant believe they cancelled this show – seriously – what elseis there to watch now?
The only show I’d ever possibly not recommend just because of the ending (or lack thereof) is The Dead Zone. Now there was a great show that didn’t know it was going to get cancelled when it did and very frustratingly left us hanging about Doomsday. At least The Event had time enough to give viewers some satisfaction. Not that I’d recommend watching The Event anyway.
This show started slow, but got exponentially better with each episode! The ending gave a small amount of closure, but has such potential for another season! It’s tremendously sad that the networks have cancelled so many good shows (and kept so many bad shows) that we are all hesitant to even try new shows! No wonder they don’t get good ratings, everyone is gun-shy! I really hope “The Event” gets picked up by a network who will appreciate it for what it is, and realize that it has a loyal fan following (bigger than the numbers would suggest)!
The show has kept me hooked up until the end, probably because i was one of those with the patience to let it play out…..This last episode had me tearing my hair out for about 30 minutes to be honest the shaun and leila story just needs to end…period…total waste of valuable storytime. However, the last 10 minutes were the best of the series by far; the way they kept the portal hanging there ominously throughout the whole episode was genius, as it allowed for a more than intriguing ending, and the way they re ignited the presidents wife story… Read more »
I would love to see another season of this show! If not that, the production team should at least post online what they were planning to do, to give the fans some sense of closure! Just imagine what the next season was going to bring us… another planet (not a really big planet, more of a planetoid, I would think…) in orbit around the Earth between it and the moon. It should orbit around the planet every 15 days or so. Tides will be VERY affected, likely doubling when the planet and the moon are in conjunction. What will this… Read more »
This show for my only get interesting towards the end. I hope season 2 comes back as its an interesting concept and I would def watch it.
I loved it – it didn’t quite fit the void that 24 left but it did come close – would love to see what they would do with the president’s wife being an alien – lots of questions that still can be answered – hope it comes back!
Great series the Event…But why?…NBC sucks!!!
There are way too many shows that go by rating alone that are being cancelled and this just takes the cake. How in the world do you end a show this good like this. Please bring it back!!!!!!
Holli is right. I didn’t know about the event until I heard a local radio show talking about it then I had to go to NBC.com to catch up. Once I did, I was hooked. When it went on winter hiatus, I knew it was dead. If the NBC knew also, then do a final episode with closure just like the ending of a book. We win or they win. Either way, leaving it the way they did stinks. I hope Syfy picks it up or TBS or TNT or any other outlet. They will have me for a customer… Read more »
well I am hoping for a season 2 I’m hooked but watch a lot of shows…I didn’t even know the show was starting back up in early 2011…I FIGURED THEY CANCELED THE SHOW THEY SHOULD HAVE ADVERTISED AND PROMOTED MORE ON TV…. I VOTE FOR SEASON 2 LOVED THE WHOLE SEASON !!!!! WE NEED A SHOW LIKE THIS… IT IS INTERESTING AND KEEPS YOU ON YOUR TOES…MOST SHOWS THESE DAYS ARE ALL ABOUT LAW AND ORDER AND CRIMINALS WE NEED SOME SCI FI SHOWS… SHAME ON NBC…. THEY ARE LOSING EVERYTHING… CBS IS TAKING OVER!!!
I realize each episode of the “Event” costs a million dollars plus. If worse comes to worse, and no one is willing to pick up the cost of continuing this geat but expensive series, perhaps one or more of the following alturnatives could be accomplished to bring the story to a firm conclusion for loyal fans like me: 1. A mini-series of one to three episodes. 2. A made for television movie. (Possibly the SyFy channel would finance it.) 3. A pay for view movie on Home Box Office. (A lot of promotion would be needed for most of who… Read more »
SyFy won’t pick it up… They are going more and more to reality TV and less and less to science fiction. Evidence of this is that they cancelled Caprica and Stargate Universe. They made a big mistake about five years ago by trying to go up against the major networks in their primse time instead of staying with summer/spring series like they did with Stargate SG-1. This is also why Battlestar Gallatica only had 4 seasons… SyFy is losing us but we really have no where else to go. I think this is why Fox renewed Fringe… Thank God.
It just made me mad that there is not much hope for a second deason. What was that all about? Bring another planet…and then leave it? I don’t think there was any closure. If I didn’t know it was canceled, I would assume (and be excited for) Season two’s opening episode would be exciting! This stinks
There was enough to leave me wanting more. At least they sorta finished the story, but they left us with more questions. It is sad because it was a bit slow going for a bit, but towards the end the show got better and better. I feel that because of the show being slow and then being removed for a while, the network did not give it a chance, but viewers did not give it a chance either. If the rumors are true, I would love for another station to pick up the show. I would like to see what… Read more »
The Event is awesome and really hits home with people familiar with the ancient alien theory. The ending episode was action packed all the way up to the end but leaves fans with too many questions to not go on! Its a well acted, well scripted show that under the right guidance can flourish. Keep the event going and help us fans continue following in excitement for the next episode week to week!
Couldn’t have put it better i was getting really frustrated with how the Humans were seemingly winning just made the show so…predictable….the last 10 minutes however have me gagging for season 2.
I thought it was pretty good. I didn’t see that final twist coming.
