To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Fox simply doesn’t put any real effort in promoting a good show that’s having problems, and when those problems start, they begin moving the show around the schedule, making it even more difficult for all but the most dedicated fans to find it. They’ve done this over and over through the years.
I loved watching Bradley Whitford in this role, it being so different from what he did on West Wing. I think sometimes his character was written just a little over-the-top, but he never failed to do it justice.
loooovvvvveeeee this show please bring it back
I loved this show. I wish it would come back on.

Sorry to hear about the cancellation. Such GREAT chemistry on the show; the best talent can’t stay on top these days; but KNOW that your fans LOVED your work and look forward to MORE work from both the co-stars and their supporting cast.
I am sooooo disappointed this show was cancelled! I loved the characters, especially Dan, and the content was a great twist on a traditional “cop show.” I plead for it to come back!!!!!
Crap.. total crap.. I can’t believe a show with so much intellectual humor was cancelled. You know it just goes to show how dumbfounded our society has become. I’m better off sticking to radio for entertainment. At least then I’m still able to use the ‘theater of the mind’ you know.. actually think for your self.. either way.. I don’t watch a whole lot of television… but good guys.. I was a watcher. I was tuned in.
P.s.. watch the movie ‘network’
This was the only show I tried to catch each week…I really enjoyed it…
I had a feeling that this show wouldn’t last long. Usually t.v. shows that are different from the normal standard formula of shows don’t last. Shame. It was better than a lot of the crap that has been on network television for the past several years. Even more shameful that it is Bulls**t shows, especially most reality shows, that get the biggest ratings these days.
Its a great show, wish usa, f/x, tbs, or tnt can pick it up. Been looking for it and came here to find out about the bad news. Needs a petition to get bit back.
Neilson rating group is so dam outdated, sad that 2,000 homes make the decision wether a show makes it or not, I hate neilson ratings.
Cable usa tbs grab it up! Coco help!
I’M DEVASTATED!!!! Are you serious?! This was one of the stand alone shows in years! Laugh out loud and STOP in your tracks to check out what was happening and how! And you’re cancelling it because the mindless masses would like MORE of the same mind-numbing pablum we’re served daily! Please someone think of those of us with intelligence Who are thrilled when you give us REAL entertainment for a change. Please! Is there anybody in there?
been waiting for season two and to find out the show has been cancelled sucks
The show was awesome! It was like a newer version of Smokey & the Bandit. They should move this show to cable its awesome and I’d watch it! We’ll miss you Dan and the Trans Am!!!
Sorry to hear that…I loved the humor and the characters..maybe a cable station will pick it up
