To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

It’s our favorite show! The show is original, fresh and truly entertaining. It should be picked up by a cable station! The regualr stations only know how to copy off the day’s news headlines!
I loved “The Good Guys” show. Wilford is great. I’m sorry to say but there are a lot more shows on TV that need to be canceled. I think “The Good Guys” should be put back on the air.
One of the best shows on TV. A great escape form the
trash like American Idol. FOX makes another mistake.
I loved, loved this show. Dan was so darn funny but he was who he was and made no apologies for it! The bonus part of the show was seeing parts of Dallas that you have been to and in one show I saw the old Grand Prairie police department! (it is now demolished) And the next scene showed the GP Memorial library. It’s always cool to see your hometime in a show! But it was just good clean fun. I am sooo tired of the crappy reality shows and the 4 million CSI/Law & Order type shows. I like… Read more »

IS ALSO TO BE CANCELLED
Totally agree that another quirky, intelligent, not to mention hilarious show was cancelled to make way for more drubbing of the masses with mindless drivel.
Oh no!!! We love this show! Please bring it back!! We don’t watch much network TV because it’s never any good…Good Guys was an exception. Come on, NBC!!!
I absolutely LOVED the show !!! It was one of very few shows that I really enjoyed watching, I hope that FOX will reconsider and give another chance at it. I am 42 and my 13 year old son and I looked forward to it every week.
LOVE this show. My boyfriend and myself waited for it each week. FINALLY something good was on on Friday nights!! DISAPPOINTED All that’s left is Mentalist and Chuck
gone are Dead Like Me, Carpoolers, The Unusuals and many more really good shows…there’s just no hope, we’re in an eternal loop of reality shows….
LOVE this show. My boyfriend and myself waited for it each week. FINALLY something good was on on Friday nights!! DISAPPOINTED
I am so sorry it was cancelled. I even got my difficult to please husband to love it! I guess the networks want to keep dumbing down America with “so called reality shows” I just don’t watch t.v. anymore, so many channels so much junk.
One of the funniest shows on television. Leave it to the network to cancel an intelligent funny show.
This is seriously one of the greatest shows on tv. It is a real dissapointment that a show with such potentioal and a great cast of acters, actresses, and characters would be discontinued. FOX NEEDS to put this show back on. To say that there isnt a show on FOX worse than this is ludacris. EVERYONE needs to write FOX and demand a second chance. Dont let this great show die like Arrested Devolopment. Thank You
