To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

What do you know we finally get a show that the whole family can watch and what happens it’s cancelled. My husband and I really enjoyed watching this show and was disappointed to find out that it had been canceled. I guess if the show doesn’t have sex and young girls cat fighting and calling each other foul names than it’s not a hit show. To me this was a show was a hit.
This was a well-written, well-directed, well-acted show. The format was clever and hilarious. I thought it was one of the best shows on TV and am very sorry it was cancelled. I wish Fox would have given it another chance on another night.
My wife and I(we’re both senior citizens) are very sorry about the cancellation of “the good guys”.We got it, and really liked the show.
We LOVED this show! It had great characters and it was FUN!! We need more like this one. I get tired of all the super serious shows (ie Criminal Minds) being the only choices. This was the one show both my husband and I both loved and watched together. And the music rocked! I would love if it could come back or get picked up by another network! So sad…….
Wow that sucks!! I and my family loved this show… too bad cable wont be picking this one up. Watched this everytime it was on!!
Awesome show…. hate to see it cancelled. My husband and I loved to watch it. Hope they will reconsider and bring it back.
This show had me in stitches every time I watched an episode! It was quirky and I loved every moment of it! There is so much crap on tv and The Good Guy’s was not part of that. I guess that’s why it got canceled- America likes crap shows 🙁
My husband & I are very, very sad that this show was cancelled. We’ve been waiting & waiting, hoping that we’d see a trailer saying when it would come back; but, now we know the terrible news. We looked forward to Friday nights to watch this very funny show. We hope another station will bring it back!!
Really sad it was cancelled. It was a great show; original, satirical premise and excellent writing. It’s true, either you get it or you don’t. Apparently, most people didn’t. I’m sure it would’ve done better on cable on a different night.
My 21-year-old son and I had a “date” every Friday night to watch “The Good Guys”. It was the one TV show that REALLY made us laugh out loud–and it didn’t need canned laughter.
Doesn’t anyone have a senses of humor?? I loved the show and thought it had great characters, funny plots and well….. warped humor. How can this show be cancelled and those STUPID reality shows still be on TV?
This just proves that the best and most original shows are on cable. The cancelling of shows like TGG and Kings is a slap in the face of intelligent viewers. There is literally 2 hours of decent non-sports, non-news programming on network. Thank goodness for cable.
Loved the show, enjoyed the actors and it had the best music.
I think this show was great and we deserve a season 2… I live at the dorms in the university and this was the only show that would keep me laughing every week!
So sad to see this show has been cancelled. It was great and halarious. I think it was on the worst night though. That is why the ratings were bad. If this show was on another night, i think it would do well. Please bring it back!!!
