To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

It was part of my Friday night line-up. I enjoyed the show immensely and am suffering withdrawals.
The Good Guys was my husband and my favorite tv show. We never missed it. Please bring it back!!
Cant believe FOX cancelled our favorite show. We couldn’t wait for Friday night.
Dan Stark was the best. Unbelievable.
NO!!! this show was so coool.
I really am unhappy.
it is really way better than those super hiper high “imaginary” TECH CSI miamis and so on.
Will miss the mustache !!!!
I’m so sorry The Good Guys was cancelled. I really enjoyed the chemistry between the actors. The show was smart and funny… PLEASE bring it back!!!
I completely agree with Gia. This show was funny, well thought out and the characters worked great together. A complete SNAFU by Fox to cancel instead of finding a better time slot. Reminds me of how “Family Guy” was originally handled.
Soooo disappointed!!!! My family’s favorite show!!! Cable please pick it up!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sorry this great show has been cancelled. It was very humerous. My wife and I looked forward to the show every week. Will Fox bring it back if I drum up about 35 million more viewers?
i loved that show
scheisse mann !!! i need a second season !!
I was just looking at the Fox web site to see when The Good Guys was coming back. What a disappointment to find out it has been cancelled. Michele Jones hit the nail on the head. PLEASE bring that show back in a better time slot. At a very minimum, don’t put another stupid animation in its place.
What a loss!
Very sad to see that this very witty show will not be back, at least they could make final episode to bring closure for the 2.31 million viewers. Think about the people that watched it, not just the Almighty $$$
how can we get it back??? my husband & I loved that show!!!!
I am so sorry to see that the good guys have been cancelled. My husband and I watch it all the time. We just loved it. We spent most of the time laughing.
The GOOD GUYS was @ the top of my list!!! Damn it, FOX, we’re not all 18-49 watching your mindless, animated shows (will they ever stop?) ! Here is a GREAT show: sidesplittingly FUNNY, memorable MUSIC, GREAT inter-generational (human!) CAST showing us that opposites CAN get along, and even LEARN from each other!! Talk to your Execs. that back your AMAZING si-fi hits(Fringe,X-Files) & UNDERSTAND that “thinking adults” (who ALSO deserve a laugh) will be LOYAL to this type of show, and PLEASE GIVE IT THE CHANCE IT DESERVES TO PROVE ITSELF! I speak for all of us that actually… Read more »
i would echo michele. my husband and i loved this show. we generaly steer clear of the fox network trash. ( did i say that loud enough? trash.) the writing was great. the acting worked so well. give it a chance in a good time slot. how is it cost effective to dismiss a show after all the start up money before giving it a good slot? especially a good show. it always astonishes me how out of touch they are. (silly me.)
Couldn’t agree with Michele more!!! We are very disappointed. Finally a show that was funny, but not stupid humor (or nonsensical cartoons); we are in the 18-49 category, but noone asked us our opinion…but if you asked we would tell you it is refreshing to see a DIFFERENT show, instead of regurgitating the same themes and same plots, in the same way, with boring “big name” actors. The Good Guys had a very creative cast of new actors, who made the show.
I really hate to see that “The Good Guys” has been cancelled. It was well written, well cast, and so very funny. But probably my opinion won’t count because I’m beyond the 18-49 age bracket!! Please bring it back and try another time slot, or get it to another network.
